Yes, it would be sweet if we were all driving around in vehicles that got 10 mpg.

Yeah but toyota did make the hideous front end and they could have given us a turbo option

I am sure it will come in the form of MPG.

I feel that is the only answer. I am sure a lot has to do with CAFE.

I would say anything less than 4-5 mpg would be a huge let down for me.

My point was when loaded. If you mean to say this Tacoma will stay in 3rd and 4th when towing then we agree there.

When auto journalists asked why no turbo on the Tacoma, here was the response:

Toyota Tacoma chief engineer Mike Sweers:
"The problem with turbos is that they are great for giving you power, but we haven't seen the fuel economy," Sweers said. "Until we can have a lean-burning turbo, the fuel economy isn't there. Where our competitors are running a lot of turbos, in our testing we can't find the fuel economy [benefit]. The biggest issue with the turbo is to keep the turbo and the catalyst cool you have to dump more fuel into it, so your fuel ratio is high. Honestly, driving some of the turbos that are out there, I drive a Tundra crew cab every day and I see better fuel economy in that than I did in my competitor's turbo. Sure, it gives you great power and there are great turbo engines out there, but on a daily driver, not so much benefit for the cost to the consumer."

Sweers did add that Toyota is always looking toward the future and if something changes, it will look closely at adding turbo engines to its lineup.

Edit: Keep in mind this would likely be a comparison to the first gen ecoboost engine.

Dude I don't belive any of Sweers mouth diarhea. He also swore the 3rd gen was all new with only a seat belt bracket in common with the 2nd gen. Obviously that was a blatant lie of you look at the cab. I can't wait to see if the suspension is the same too.

The funny thing is a couple of years ago before the new Tundra released there was plenty of rumors of talks going on between Toyota and Ford. It would make sense for Toyota to buy someone elses V8 design for North America because it would likely save money over having their own V8.

BTW, I could lean on the Ecoboost all day and not touch 14 mpg combined yet put out way more power. Sweers isn't going to say that Toyota is behind the 8 ball out loud.

Suspension at least in person is exactly the same. The steering wheel is carried over, the third brake light, a lot of things look the same in person, the bed is the same for cry n out loud. Sure a lot changed but that was a load of crap when he said that, he should know better, Tacoma owners are a unique bunch, we will analyze everything.

The only thing I see the 3rd gen has going for it is new interior, new blue color option, and the crawl box terrain selector thingy majig

    Too few to list.
I'm glad I bought my 2015. I'm sure people would have been happier sticking the dual vvt-i making 270hp @ 5600 and 278lbs at 4400 with the new 6 speed auto. Toyota has never been about power though. Always about reliability and durability.

Agreed, would have love to see a 6 speed paired up to the current platform. Though the current transmission is proving to be quite reliable after owning a ranger with terrible transmission problems I put a lot of weight into having a reliable transmission.

    Yup.
Minus 80's style radio center the rest of the Dash is improvement so are seats and finish. Since its the same cab it should not be that big issue to swap those into 2gen.
The rest of the truck does not seem to be an improvement at all.

One item not mentioned is transfer case. On NY auto show that transfer case did not look like ours. Neither looked like 4runner transfer case. I wonder if thats Highlander transfer case, which really would be way too funny.

Well, I guess I won't be returning to a Tacoma. Sucks that the Tundra is awful in the fuel economy dept.

Yeah toyota could have revamped the 4.0 from the 4Runner and made it better than the 3.5. I mean come on I was wanting one so bad but now I'll be going with the 4Runner now I guess..

I think I would swap into 2gen everything, but dash. I dont like those clocks.
I think its sad that Mike Sweers is the guy who worked on Tacoma.
No wonder why that new truck is such a fail with Eng like that its a surprise it even exists..

Here is best explanation I can quickly find..

    http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/27/automobiles/turbochargers-for-fuel-economy.html?_r=0

Essentially Turbo recovers energy that would be lost in exhaust, and gives it back to you. You can use that Enrgy for more power or better economy or both...

Turbo's aren't free energy. The engine has to pump out the waste gases at a certain speed to maintain efficiency. Increased "back pressure" aka air resistance from the turbo's means increased work must be done from the engine.

Turbo's have a drag cost too. It's not as high as a S/C and there is an advantage to utilizing some energy that would otherwise be wasted, but to say it's free energy is to miss how a turbo works. A lot of how a turbo makes things more efficient has to do with Carnot efficiency. I'll let you read up on that.
