I think it's safe to say that "X"w-20 oils are not harmful to longevity of engines. In fact both Toyota and Mobil 1 0w-20 synthetic oils are very highly regarded by oil experts. Plenty of vehicles have racked up a ton of miles with those oils.

Filling up with 5w-20 on accident wouldn't be much of a concern to me.

This is why you NEVER EVER let the dealer do your oil change.

Do it your self, save the time and money, and grease your driveline (which they will never do) while your waiting for the oil to drain)

Your engine is going to blow up. Change it now before you shoot a rod out of the side of the block.

Yes like stated after doing a bunch of reading. 0w-30 is perfectly OK to use even in a warm climate like so cal. Cold even 0w oil is not thin enough to properly lube a motor, BUT 0w-30 starts out thinner and gets to the proper thickness quicker than 5w-30 or 10w-30. There is no reason you should be running anything but 0w-30 synthetic if you are running 5w/10w-30 synthetic.

I wouldn't worry about it if it was mine. Just use the correct weight on the next change. Now, dumping Mobil one after only 5K miles, I might have a problem with .

I have a 3.4L and just wonder if I'd see any mpg gains with 0w30 over my current mobil1 5w30

I noticed about a .25-.4mpg increase when i switched from 0w-30 from 5w-30 mobile 1 syn in the cooler months. I did it more for wear protection during the high wear of a cold start on a motor.

Firestone was running 5w-30 in my CRV that takes 5w-20. They always told me they only put what is listed on the oil cap (when I asked the first time only put 5w-20). Going on 135K miles on the CRV.

Yes I was pissed at Firestone for lying to me. But in the end no damage. I do my own oil changes now is the lesson I learned. True story.

FYI Toyota Tech told me to put 10w30 in my truck to quite the engine.

It actually does mean winter, and not weight.

Yeah, me. Been using this weight for the last 3 years or so (M1). Gets the oil flowing at startup, and, at least it was, dino oils can't make the 0W rating, requires the use of predominately synthetic to get 0W.

I would like to point out that a 20 will burn off a lot more quickly than any other heavier weight. Currently because of this, there is a legal matter concerning Audi, and I believe Volkswagen, against they're claim that it be normal to use a quart of oil in 750-1000 miles. Well, by the time a consumer comes in for their extended drain interval of 5k miles +, the engine is nearly empty of oil, on the cars with 5 quarts. Mini has stopped doing warranty claims on their turbo models, if the owner has done anything to their car eninge wise, and wasn't having the dealership do the oil changes. Turbos stress the oil more than N/A.

Here's the thing, a 20 weight could be ok, here in American, if the EPA, hadn't cut the ZDDP across the board for all oil viscosities. But they did. In Europe however, their agency realized that the light weight oils needed more than the heavier weight oils. So their 20 weight will have more than our 20 weight, in parts per million, and will have more than a 30 weight, 40 weight, 50weight. All descending in parts per million as viscosity increases.

I can tell that no one has taken it upon themselves to look up what ZDDP is, so I'll give a brief synopsis. It is antiwear additive. It it the additive that makes oil stay in extremely hot areas of the engine, aids it in preventing metal to metal contact, and micrscopically burnishes surfaces to make them smoother. It was determined in the 60's or 70's what the proper amount needed was to prevent catastrophic engine wear. That ppm number is double what S.A.E. seal of Approval oil have in them. Race cars use oils with a minimum of 2200 ppm. Their engines typically run higher RPMs which tax and heat the oil more. On top of the ambient temp of the climate it is running in. For a regular commuter car, roughly 12-1400 ppm is wanted. Not 800. Our 1GR is similar to a flat tappet engine in that it is cam on bucket shim. Easy to wear those parts as there are no roller components. Basically metal on metal.
Also a higher ZDDP count in a 20 weight oil would prevent it from burning off so quickly. Anyone that thinks I am talking crazy, talk to those who have catch cans. A 20 weight will fill it up more quickly than the other weights. I'm not even going to get into the new Dexos strand of oils.

There is a reason that oil is cheaper at Wal-Mart. They buy huge amounts and tell the manufacturer how much they are going to pay them. For the manufacturer to make that happen, they modify the product in order to match the money being paid to them. This means they cut costs, and to do so, that means they don't put in their all of their additive packages or the same quality of additive packages that they would somewhere else. Wal-Mart does this to all of its vendors alike. Thus all of its vendors make some sort of change in their product to meet the funding of Wal-Mart. Look it up. It is actually pretty well known.

I'm feel in a Fry meme right now.
