Let's see your roof racks

Here's what it looks like now. You can get shorter bars that don't extend out, but I usually have a kayak and a box on top.

Great point, something I've not considered. It is nice to be able to fold the bars away.

 

For the record - Thule has a very similar setup, and I think they're a little cheaper. Trouble is Thule tends to have a better fit on American cars, and Yakima tends to fit foreign cars. Yakima also has a line called whispbar. More expensive, but it has "the best" fuel economy (they claim) and no noise.

Thanks Ian. Around these parts, I see mostly Thule on all sorts of vehicles - do not see many Yakima. I am really torn between OEM and Yakima. They are each very different but I like them for different reasons as well.

 

The big claim that Yakima has is their strength. Idk what the Toyota oem bars are made of, but Yakima bars are steel. They come with a guarantee on them of 450lbs carrying strength. Most vehicle cross bars don't come close to that (somewhere around 200-250). Honestly, I have no idea what you would haul 450lbs on your roof for, but I do know that 3-4 kayaks is more than 200lbs. That's why I went the Yakima.

 

Say what you will, but I love my OEM / homemade rack.

 

OEM capacity is crap honestly, it is something like 50lbs. Then again, I don't forsee carrying anything heavy on my roof. I have a 6ft box and a trailer.

I think aesthetically the truck just looks better with a roof rack (any rack)

Totally agree on the looks. Although I've had a rack on every car I've ever owned, so I'm a little biased lol.

 

I've always had cars. So truck accessories are new to me. Although these days, I am finding myself researching and buying more truck related mods, then motorcycle stuff lol

 

Doesn't look like it's been mentioned yet but IMO FrontRunner Outfitters makes the best rack for our trucks. There is almost a unlimited amount of options that you can attach to it. No wind noise at all

Yakima and Thule both make excellent racks, far superior to OEM. You can't go wrong with either one. I prefer Yakima because the cross bars are round tube, which I prefer for tying canoes to. I am told though, that the square tube Thule uses is better for mounting accessories, as the flat surface gives better purchase for the clamps.

 

Factory roof racks are mostly for looks only. Only rated for 100lbs but I would never put that much weight on one

Here's another variant I was not aware of. Thanks for posting, it looks super sturdy. One thing I knew for sure before I got the truck is that there are going to be countless mods available. Now to decide which way to go....looks or function or both

 

Prinsu racks are very good racks with a lot of options. I "personally" don't like the look of them because of the exposed bolts. I bought the FrontRunner because it looks cleaner, completely quiet, and more options than you can imagine.

 

You have a badass truck. FR rack looks great on it.
