Do the lockers help when the Jeep needs to be towed?

    I know. ;)

FWIW, The New Jeeps have a 3.6 engine, and not only does it outperform the larger ones, and get better economy, but it didn't come with a purse. So lets just see what Toyota has in their hand before trying to show off some basic math, calling people names, and such.

I still have the 4.0, good engine but terrible on fuel. I will miss having a inline six but can't wait for the new Tacoma.

LOL at this thread. Nothing has even been officially released by Toyota/EPA yet regarding all the HPs/Torques/MPGs/etc etc. It's funny how so many people that hate the gen 3 truck so much yet have nothing better to do than hang around the GEN 3 TRUCK FORUM bashing it. I hate Justin Bieber, so I sure as fuck dont hang out on Justin Bieber forums.

Yes, and it has 800 torks and still gets 18 mpg with mostly city driving. Meanwhile, my 2013 Tacoma didn't get much better even though it weighed significantly less.

I really wanted to like this new Tacoma, but due to it looking as though it rear ended Hillary, and now further disappointing power, that might not happen. For many here.

I think the numbers are just fine... What are you pulling around where you need so much damn power? It's a midsize truck, even if it could pull 10k pounds, I never would in a truck that size. It is just unsafe and if youre pulling that size of a load, youre going to want a heavier, larger truck to do it. The current 4.0L has a 6500# tow capacity. Thats a trailer with a vehicle on it, a big ass camper, what more do you need to pull around? Id be happy with similar power as the 4.0L and a 20% fuel improvement. I know, I know dont buy a truck for mpg but thats not an argument anymore. Trucks have become peoples family haulers, daily drivers so theyre going to want a well rounded vehicle. A lot cheaper to own one car than two....

    Chris 4x4,
With all the talk about your Jeep, I have to ask if you know of any good shops in the metro that might specialize in CJ7's. I have a gorgeous 1982 that I've had since 2007, but I believe it has a blown head gasket, and of course a busted stud.

The new Tacoma is supposed to be a little bit lighter. Has similar torque and more HP. And better fuel economy it should be fine.

If I ever decide to upgrade, I just hope that new 3.5 will tow my 16 foot fishing boat, get me to work at freeway speeds, take my kid to judo on Saturdays and not kill me at the pump while doing it. Oh and I hope I can still fit the truck in the parking garage at the mall downtown. Do you think I'll be in luck or should I go with a 1 ton diesel crew cab just to be safe?

You will need to get the Dually's to make sure that people don't park too close to your doors.

It depends on the design of the engine. Horse power is calculated from the torque, so peak horse power depends entirely on how the torque curve looks. In an idealized case where torque is a flat line across the RPM range, horse power will just rise linearly with higher rpm hitting peak at redline. Many engines, including as the 1GR, have a torque curve that peaks at some point and then it starts to go down. Depending how steeply it drops after it peaks determines how much room there is between peak HP and redline. The redline prevents the engine from damaging itself because something will break if revs are allow to rise without bound. edit: Meaning that the redline is somewhat independent of other engine performance factors.

More sophisticated variable valve timing can flatten out the torque curve and get you towards that ideal where the engine always produces maximum torque independent of RPM. So I think in the case of the 1GR the HP is limited by the torque dynamics. But it appears in the 2GR the torque curve will not drop off as quickly so the engine actually hits redline before it would theoretically hit peak HP.

It sounds like a Nissan Cube or Kia Soul should take care of all that. No need for over kill.

I recommend a semi truck. 10 wheels, turbo deisel and a sleeper for camping.
