    No passes needed. Wouldn't hurt to stop and ask about any closures, etc before heading out. I know there were several fires in the area the first time I was through, made sure someone knew we were out there just in case!
    There were several washouts along the road in MT. I'd check in with the Bitterroot FS Office in Darby and see what the current conditions are. They called them washouts, I called them massive landslides. Huge sections of the hillside washed out across the road and blocked the creek last year. It was a mess. And I was there in the fall, about 2 days after they had gotten the road back open.



    IIRC there was some camping spots available near the end of the Elk City Wagon Road about 12 miles west of Elk City. Have you asked the FS if you can camp in their parking lot? Never heard of anyone doing that before.... There are a lot of private cabins and whatnot around Elk City as well, be sure you're not on private land where ever you set up camp for the night!

    My suggestions for Magruder would be to camp somewhere between Burnt Knob lookout (not enough room up there for your group unfortunately - 3 or 4 trucks at the most) and Observation Point. There are several campsites along that stretch of road, should be easy to fit everyone in. There is a campsite at the Dry Saddle Trailhead about 2 miles past the Burnt Knob turnoff - its on the hill above the outhouse. Plenty of room up there for your group. After that there's a 3-ish mile stretch of really narrow road and a campsite towards the bottom of the hill on the curve (Sabe Saddle), we camped there the first night but its all burned out now :(. After that there's another 2.5 mile stretch and another campsite (Sabe Vista) - have yet to camp in this spot but I want to badly! There's a small loop off of the main road overlooking the valley to the SW - awesome views! You could fit everyone in there if you parked wagon train style in a circle. Another 3-ish miles of steep road and more campsites after that - a few scattered either side of the road along hte next 12 miles. Then you're at Observation Point - there is a "campground" here but its not much just some dirt parking areas, rock fire rings and an old wooden outhouse that you think may collapse on you at any moment.

    And take the time for the detour to Paradise! So pretty up there. And there's a few deep spots in the river - perfect for a quick dip.

    Also, download the ap OSMAND on either type of device. Download your states and you'll be set with whatever trails you are doing. Doesn't need data, and sometimes has the trails you are on. I'd recommend checking it out against the map you have.

    You're welcome! Wrong time of year for a long trip for me or I'd probably be going with you guys. Going later in the summer wasn't bad....minus the landslides and ten million bear hunters. I didn't realize it was bear season until I noticed that camp in Paradise started to fill up around dark. Me and about 40 heavily armed men camping that night.... :laugh: That's why they were in a rush to open the raod - a lot of outfitters had hunters coming in for bear season and most of them had paid in full long before the landslides!

    Don't need a map of Magruder....its the only road in the area. Literally. As long as you know east from west its pretty damn hard to get lost up there!

    Ill toss mine in the truck so we will have one set. From what ive seen this isnt really "off-road" but more of a forest service road so shouldnt be needing tons of extra parts.

    That would be a must have with all of the burned out areas along the road - too easy for the wind to topple them over.

    And its very dusty up there. If you were thinking of changing your air filter I'd wait until after the trip
