Oh yeah. Tuesday's had a recall due to spinning cam bearings due to to light an oil. Pretty sure that was a 20 weight as well. I could be wrong on that. Look it up.

My guess is that a lot of those vehicles that are consuming a quart of oil every thousand miles with 0w-20 would be consuming as much if they were running 5w-30. I haven't noticed any oil loss in my 2.7 Tacoma, but it's still pretty new and not exactly a performance vehicle.

Regarding Walmart, I've never found any proof of that. Sure they have lower price point items, but a bottle of Mobil 1 from Walmart will be the exact same as a bottle purchased at O'Riley's or NAPA. People tried saying the same with some of the guns Walmart sells, but a certain Colt rifle they sell is the exact same inside and out as what your normal gun store would sell. Please post proof to back up that claim.

Good third party proof please. I've been using Pennzoil Platnium from Walmart for a while now. No ill effects. My work also is an Esso/Mobile dealer and if it was true that our oil was better than Wal Marts you bet we'd up sell that. We've been told right from the manufacturer that the oil we sell is the exact same as any other oil in the same bottle.

According to Mobil's web site, Mobil One sold at Walmart is the exact same as oil sold at other outlets. Because of legal liabilities they would not post it on their web site if it wasn't true

I'm sure it's one of those urban legends. Someone, probably dealing oil, hated WalMart and started the rumor amongst some people in the performance and/or race circuit. Now it's out there, and while there is no proof, people will believe it because it's hit critical mass.

Kind of like saying Pit Bulls have locking jaws:
Lots of people on the street believe it so it must be true right? Kind of like how people believed the earth is round, etc etc etc

BTW the largest reason why no major manufacturer is going to change their oil for Wal Mart has to do with the API. The Oil companies would have to submit every oil and every grade they sell at Wal Mart for revaluation by the API to make sure it passes there tests to get the seal on the bottle. Each test runs at least 5 figures. So no, no one is going to do that.

Of course it is. What major company is going to purposefully hurt their name by selling an inferior product? Yeah, WalMart buys in bulk, my cousin being one of their main buyers, but they do not have companies make a lower quality product just for them. It's absurd to think any major company would risk their brand name that way.

The "Walmart Effect" is real. Whether it's actually in effect for this case, I don't know, but going into attack mode is probably not justified.

I have actually seen electronic suppliers that have a different model number for a Walmart device then for everyone else. The devices appear to be the same capability, but separate part numbers.

As for the API. I had thought that the API certified the base oil, not the base+additive package. Definitely not sure on that one though.

IIRC they have include the additives now. It took Mobil something like ten tries to get there new 5w-40 to pass at a cost of a couple of million dollars because it couldn't hold the amount of particulates the newest Diesel standard called for.

That story was told right at a dealers meeting for Mobil. I was there.

Yeah, I like tor's comments as well and hold them up pretty high. There is a huge difference though between offering a slightly cheaper TV and changing your oil formulation though. That's like saying because Samsung sells a cheaper Blu Ray model at Wal Mart Lysol must water down their cleaners to meet Wal Marts price.

You are taking my words a step further than my intent, but no problem. My point was mainly that when you are the largest retailer, you can define and structure supplier's to your liking. In this case, while it's not just Walmart that an oil company needs to conform to, Walmart could, and does in other cases, "force" a supplier to take a product that is over-engineered, and "ask" them to engineer it to lesser specs, while still meeting other specs. This could mean that the supplier just does this for everyone rather then for Walmart, and everyone else.

For M1 or any others, it's easy enough to check. Get the SKU from each store, and if they are the same, then same stuff at both places.

For the OP, if it were me, I would either drain it all and replace, or drain a couple quarts then add some 0/5/10W-40 to thicken it up. More than likely drain and replace

Maybe I'll borrow a couple of Mobil bottles from work. Could still have difference SKU's though if the amount in the bottle or anything else is adjusted on the packaging.

My point is though when you have a product that has to meet a standard for warranty purposes with the major auto companies, odds are you aren't putting your brand on the line for a few cents at the local Wal Mart.

Just an FYI Samsung has told Wal Mart to go to hell a few times. Google it. Apple, Samsung, and a few other large companies don't need Wal Mart, but Wal Mart needs them to stay a brand leader.

I don't think this is accurate for oils. I think it's worse :p: every oil mfr continuously find ways to cut costs while squeaking by the minimum API and Dexos requirements.

At least it isn't like gasoline, where the additives don't get added until it's loaded in the tanker truck enroute to the gas station.

I hate Walmart, sketchy customers, weirdo employees, 3 cashiers with 500 customers in a store.. always out of stock of the things I need..
It's not even like they have that good of prices compared to other places..
