Why did you choose Prerunner (or 2WD) over 4x4?

I'm on my 4th Tacoma all were 4x4, my present one I have now I almost bought a prerunner, just for the fact that a prerunner upfront was cheaper. I did get the 4x4 based on the fact I thought it would have better resale value when the time comes and more people would want a 4x4. I just sold my old 98 for 8k with 82,000 miles. That was 1/3 what I paid for it 17 yrs ago.

It's also about RISK. Call your insurance agent. Value is NOT the sole factor in determining insurance. A more powerful, capable vehicle carries a higher RISK.

A teenaged driver with a clean record costs more to insure driving the same vehicle as a 35 year old driver with a clean record. RISK.

Correct. But the point being made about insurance premiums was about the vehicle, not the driver.

Even *if* that were true and since being 4wd makes the vehicle more valuable, that makes the insurance more expensive. Hmmmm....

 

I have. I have owned dozens of new vehicles over the past 40 years. Cars. Trucks. Boats. Motorcycles. Atv's.

The ins. company/agent asks for the vin #. That tells the model and value. The premium is based on that. (Along with driver information).

As I posted earlier. A loaded Prerunner TRD will cost more to insure then a base 4x4.

 

EXACTLY. They know everything about the vehicle from the vin. That tells them everything they need to know about the vehicle options/drivetrain(not just the value).

Changing your zip code will change your insurance rate. Do you know why? RISK.

 

Pretty much the same.

I'm not even pre runner. Just base. No snow. No mountain trails to climb, no swamps to maneuver.

I've driven thousands of off road miles, been more stuck than most can imagine, had more fun than anyone deserves while being paid to do it. But life changes, and I don't need that ability now.

Truck hauls what I want, bikes, kayaks, light loads, fishing gear or project tools just fine. Don't need lift. May put on bigger tires when the OE units wear out in a few years. Maybe.

 

I'm no insurance specialist.....just thought I'd throw this out there. The difference between the yearly insurance premium between my previous '13 base, RC, 4 cyl, 2WD and my new '15 DCSB, TRD Sport Prerunner, V6......less than $3. Yep....my premium went up $2.53 a year. Driver and driver history have a lot to do with it.

MSRP on the '13 base was about $18,700

MSRP on the '15 TRD Sport Prerunner was $30,475

I'm on my 3rd Taco which is a 2012 DCSB Prerunner Trd Sport

Driving habits: mostly city - some light offroad when camping or taking my bike out to the trails

Main reason I went with prerunner: cost!!!!

My first Taco was a 2003 DC 4x4 and rarely used the 4x4 then traded for a 2006 prerunner Texas Edition LB

Main reason was cost but also I was not really into off-roading until recently. I put 22" wheels on it at first but got tired of that look so I got some Duratracs. I got the Duratracs cuz of all the rave reviews on here and also the aggressive look.

Bottom line I wish I would've bought a 4x4.


My truck is too close to being paid off now so not trading for a new one.

Gonna wait about a year and a half and get another Taco. Definitely gonna be a 4x4.

Doubt I get the 3rd gen it still hasn't grown on me yet. The 2015 Trd Pro is probably gonna be my next Taco

 

I went from a 7 year old Scion xB to a brand new Tacoma in 2013 and it was $7 more per month.

 

4x4 is not a 5 thousand dollar up charge on a Tacoma.

4x4 w auto & 4.0 = $28,235
