    I think it's time for us Nor-call wheelers to step our radio game. I'm done with CB So I'm going to take my Amateur ham test. They are holding a one day class and test here in Benicia on the 26th of September If anyone wants to join.

    Those are nice inexpensive radios. I highly recommend getting an external antenna for these. ive had other handhelds that had ~8w with a rubber antenna that didn't do much outside what a 4w with a rubber could do.

    Go for it! VHF/UHF radio comms is soooo nice! I obtained my license in 2013. :D

    • Crystal clear audio,
    • shorter antennas,
    • excellent range,
    • repeater access,
    • linked systems,
    • safer for back country travel,
    • etc.,

    Through a repeater I logged a contact over 200 miles from Death Valley.

    The one day classes pretty much teach you the test. There is a large pool of questions that the test pulls from. So the whole day, you are just reading a shit ton of questions and the correct answers only.

    Yeah, there are a lot of benefits to ham. Range is an obvious benefit because you can run higher wattages, but the biggest thing is being able to repeat.

    When running in groups, two people with higher power rigs can act as relays between groups in different locations.

    Basically no more "where the f is jerry?" "can we start cooking tri-tip yet?"
