As I said earlier (post #2845), I did some more exploring on Tuesday in the Sly Park area. On the way to the slabs (to pick up trash and broken glass), I drove the lower section of Baltic Ridge 4WD road, which goes from Bonetti road to N/S road. Very easy forest road that a Camry could likely negotiate. Since its on top of the ridge, there are no switch backs or climbs. Very narrow, smooth, and mostly dirt. Rather short, about 3 miles long, and boring to drive at normal speed.

HOWEVER, due to gentle curves, and occasional 'forest speed bumps', it was a blast at 30 mph. Had to be careful, though, since its heavily forested, with big trees on the edge of the narrow road most of the way. At one point, I drifted a bit and could have easily slid into one.

I'd like to make another trip up to Crater Lake to stick my cube on the frame instead of the roof and to sit and watch the Osprey catch fish longer than I did the other day. Wife won't be going again on this trail because it's a very rocky road that did her back in with the degenerative disks and arthritis. So fair warning if you want to go up to this lake.

Most difficult part going up. Sorry, but the video quality of the cube just isn't great. It really doesn't show the size of rocks and such. Having it on the roof probably didn't help, but I hadn't tried it there yet.

After driving up to the Alhambra Mine, went down a new way based on feedback from a guy on an ATV. Purpose of this one shows you the view up top and the switch backs (difficult for a DCLB)

Which Crater Lake is this? Do you have a Forest/Road #? Off of which Highway?

 

Hwy 88 east of Carson Pass (3-4 miles). I'll have to look at my map tomorrow and see if it goes that far east. I posted pics from google maps back a few pages with the lake and stuff circled in red.

 

Here's a map I found online. Road 31091 (the upper blue line). We came down 31065 from the mine. That one had a lot of overgrown brush encroaching on the road.

Yes. The entrance is paved and will sneak up on you. You won't see it until the last second. Take that second one when traveling east. Just to give you an idea where it is...you drop all the way to the bottom after the pass where there's a turnout and cabins on the left. Then you go uphill (IIRC you pass the old corral on the right?). You hit the top of the rise and then go downhill again. Just before the bottom, there's a paved road on the left (maybe 300 ft before the bottom). Go up and stay to the right after you go through the old fence opening. If you miss turning in, just after it on the highway is a large turnout at the bottom on the westbound side. You can turn around and then come back to it (done that myself before when I missed it...I'm not kidding when I say you won't see it until you're right at it). I think it's the only paved road on that side.

Halfway up is where the road splits. Stay straight for the lake. Toughest part is a quarter mile after the split. On the last quarter mile to the lake, there will be nowhere to pass or pull off if a vehicle comes the other way. Keep your fingers crossed on that stretch or one of you will be backing up a long way.

To the right at the split is the mine. Bunch of old collapsed buildings and two mine openings up top. I would advise staying out of the mine. Just a dangerous situation. And there's one switchback where you have to drive to the end and turn around on some old tailings in order to go back to the next leg. That's the last switchback at the top.

Just leaving her folks house in Santa Rosa, had to feed the horses and let the dogs out for awhile.

Going to gas up and grab some Starbucks and hit the highway. Hopefully it isn't bad, car is comfortable enough but traffic sucks.

Probably be 30 minutes or so before we are actually headed that way instead of finishing up loose ends here in town.

Tires should be fine. Just avoid any pointy sharp rocks. Ground is dry, so should be fine in that regard. And if you head up to the mine, the tiny creek you cross is shallow.

Had to get out of the house last night, met up with a buddy to go have a beer on the slabs...




Had a blast, I'll see if my buddy can send me the video he took... broke my hitch plug bracket going up the "back way" as my buddy put it...
