On my led switch the two leds are independently wired. I just used the power and dimming ground from the factory switches. The switches light up when the rest of the dash lights are on. Dimming isn't as fluid as an incandescent but it does it.

Yeah I knew about that for the second gens...the switches I have are also independently wired, the lights that is. Bottom light I want to come on with dash lights and the topcomes on when the switch is flipped, by design. I knew the tops lights wouldn't dim due to the way the harness is but the bottom is what I'd like to dim. But at this point I'd just like to know a good spot to get power with dash lights. On first gens there isn't a lot of easy places to do this(except maybe in the dash fuse box? Add a fuse). Tap into a dash light wire that is, at least for a novice like myself.

On the first gen dimmer knob there is two wires coming off the back of the knob. Both white one green striped one I think black striped. I tapped the green strip and they dim but backwards from the dash lights.

Check to see if the light for your ashtray light is always on even if headlights are off, I seem to recall using that for my switches. Then again I have a CB in the ashtray spot now so it always is in the "open" position.

    Son of a... :frusty:

My '98 doesn't have an astray light, or the wiring for it. Some 98-00s do but mine doesn't.

I'm still looking for a illumination wire(s) in the cab to tap into for my illumination wires coming off the switchbacks @skygear built me.

    I'm a 98-00 (1st gen obviously)

Me too! I'm bout ready to just run an add a fuse to the tail light fuse in the under hood fuse box. I believe that fuse also runs the running lights and gauge lights so it should be sufficient for illuminating the bottom light on rocker switches. I just don't have the patients or the wiring know how to easily find what I need under the dash. I just wish there was a fuse in the cab box that would work, as far as coming on with the dash lights, unless I'm mistaken??

And I sure wish I'd finally get my RTMR and switchbacks finally so I can finish all my projects that are held up due to wiring.

I haven't had access to a first gen to document the illumination yet. Sorry

Do you have a dimmer switch? If so you could probably find the correct wire to tap right at the source.

I did the dimmer switch. There is two wires off the back of it, I used a test light, had power and it dimmed! Got everything back together and the fuckers dim opposite of the dash lights! Damn it!! So those two wires off the back of that switch/knob are useless. A guy needs to tap into the lighting circuit after the dimmer knob.

Just use one of the wires, the one that dims. I assume you ran your test light from the power wire to a ground (bolt head).

Did you use 1 or both of the wires? Toyota normally dims off the +&- so you have to use both.

So both the small wires off the back of the switch spliced into the one + illumination wire??

Yeah I did use just the one. White with green strip. Should a specified that. I couldn't seem to get my test ighy to light on the other wire, but I had already found the first to work so maybe I didn't try to hard. I just didn't realize it was working backwards.

I don't know if it is the same for 1st gen but on the second gen the positive is 12v and as you dim the ground starts having positive voltage introduced to it. It basically starts to eliminate the ground supply in order to dim the bulb.

If you used the dimmer ground as your positive illumination supply it would explain why the switch dimmed in reverse. That is all assuming that the 1st gen dims in the same way.

Try connecting your test light from the other wire to a constant hot lead, like from your fuse box.
