Why did you choose Prerunner (or 2WD) over 4x4?

I'm self employed. I went with 2WD because if the weather is so bad that a 4WD is needed, I stay home.

So wrong. In terms of what I could buy...absolutely not true. In terms of spending money on something as useless to me as 4 wheel drive (for my needs anyway)...yes. In other words, I could afford as much Tacoma as money could buy....but I chose not too.

More than the money for sure was the added complexity. Yes, it's a Toyota...I get that. But shit breaks on them as well. Just not worth the gamble for me given that 4 wheel drive would be a complete waste for my particular needs.

But I do agree with most of your post.

 

I envy you guys that live in places where 4x4 isn't needed unless you off road. I'd own a prerunner in a second. I only need 4x4 in the winter. I suffered through three years of no 4x4 in a 4x2 ranger. Never got stuck stuck only hung up a few times throttle control and I was moving again. Honestly 4x4 is only needed a few times a year but when I need it I want it available. I think I used it 3 times last winter....I keep it in 2 wheel until I absolutely need 4 wheel

Rock those prerunners. I would be but I don't want to fight snow.

Well, I live in Delaware where we get minimal snow and it's flat. I have had AWD and never truly encountered a situation where I felt it saved me. My wife's Legacy is AWD so we have that as a backup, the big thing comes down to money.

I need a double cab for the car seat, family and customers(I'm in sales and take people out to lunch sometimes), I paid $22,800 for this and it gets decent mileage due to the 4cyl. I'd have to go up to at least $29,000 to get the same thing in a 4wd, it would also bump me up to a v6 which gets worse mileage. I could easily afford the upgrade but for the life of me couldn't justify it.

Every once in a while I think I should have but it's more of an ego thing, I really don't need it and it has kept more money in my pocket from lower payments and less fuel.

The biggest savings is mods: I have put on M/S2's, a Truxport, bed mat, Pop and Lock, backup camera, fog lights, and intermittent wipers. It now has everything I want on a 4cyl prerunner(okay maybe a gentex mirror, some speakers and an amp in the future). If I had a v6 4x4, on top of the mods I already have I would be looking at 285's, lockers, lifts etc. which I don't need but that wouldn't stop me.

For now I'll just enjoy a nice comfortable truck that gets good mileage and holds its value like nothing else on the road. I love the 4cyl, it's simple and reliable.

 

We get snow here too. I've owned a few trucks in my day...all of them 2 wheel drive. With the proper tires and sensible driving habits....4 wheel drive is not needed in 95+% of winter driving.

 

I agree. Like I said only used it 3 times last year. When I want it though I want it. I drove that 4 cylinder ranger through snow storms that guys with big 4x4 trucks called off during. Studded winter tires and she would go.

 

The best car that I drove in the Cleveland Ohio winters was a Volkswagen Rabbit. Front wheel drive and light as a feather.

My 5lug rear wheel drive was a chore.

 

And the really BIG V6.

Main reason for 2wd: Bought this in Oct 2012 with 6K miles at a great price. I had a 4WD Chevy truck prior and rarely used it. 3 winters in and I've not had issues, even with the brutal winter last year.

Mine went fine with snow tires. That's the key.

I just had 2 Firestone WinterForce tires on the rear. Mounted them on extra steelies so I could pop them on and off when needed. Got through snow much deeper than what you see in this picture.

08, at the time didn't feel the need for a 4x4 since wife has a Yukon. Figured I'd save a few bucks not getting the 4 wheel drive. Pretty good in the snow, with proper tires. Looking back, I would have gotten the 4x4.

The difference between stock rubber and snows is night and day. Our first big snow last winter was 15 inches. I was parked next to a TRD Sport Prerunner. They plowed the parking lot and he couldn't even get over the hump created by that. By little base just rolled right through it.

The first thing I did when I got my new truck was to snag a couple of FJ steelies and some Duratracs. I've always gone with dedicated snow tires, but the DT's are rated almost as good in the white stuff and have a much better tread wear rating. We'll see how they do in a few months. But yeah, I always have a winter-setup. Tires and smart driving....that's what's always got me through the winters....not 4 wheel drive.

 

Is anyone really getting that much better mpq with a Prerunner? My 15 TRD Offroad Prerunner is worse then my 04 TRD Offroad 4x4. Granted the 2nd gens are heavier and my 04 was a stick. I just saw that many of you had posted that as a reason. I also found a couple vids of 2wd Tacos offroading just for the hell of it.

I get ~20 mpg city.
