I posted this in my build thread but I feel like this is where it should be. Im thinking about investing in a nice D-SLR camera. Always enjoyed amateur photography and want to document some of my trips a little better while maybe adding some memories to the walls in my house. I dont mind investing in something I will use for many years so price isnt a deal breaker here.

That being said, what camera setups do yall recommend? And what accessories do you consider a must have? Any OSX editing programs you recommend?

I would like a camera that my skills can grow into but not be overwhelmed while learning a bit more. Also- I like to shoot things like landscapes, macros and nightscapes and maybe my truck and dog once and while...

    Thoughts/recommendations?

The lenses matter more than the camera itself. I'm not saying to just buy any camera and spend thousands on lenses, but it's really tough to go wrong with any Canon or Nikon.

    I'm a Canon guy myself.

I think the perfect starter SLR camera is the Nikon D3100/D3200. After you've used it for a while and have used it in full manual mode and really understand how it works I say go big or go home. Canon 5D Mk3 with an array of lenses.

I've also owned a Panasonic GH4 ... Easily the best camera for shooting video.

The only reason I prefer Canon is I think it has a better interface. Easier to figure out how to change your shutter speed, aperture, manage files, etc. That probably varies from person to person though and my experience is with cameras that are all at least 2-3 years old now so things may have changed.

I just have an old Rebel XS myself with the stock 18-55 lens. I use it very little, so I haven't been able to justify spending the money on more lenses or a more modern/higher end camera. It is fun, though. I will say the battery life is incredible. I have had this camera for 4+ years and still have the original battery. I've never drained it below about 75% in a day and it still holds a charge perfectly.

I also recommend the Canon system. I have owned Canon DSLR's for years and they have an awesome interface and great optics.

This. I started out with a D80 which is a great camera to learn on. Upgrading to a D5300 soon. But lenses are the most important.

This is the route I may go. Seems like a good platform to learn the basics and get comfortable shooting before upgrading to the $$$$ systems.

Awesome. I have heard the same thing about the Canon interface being very intuitive. I will look into the Rebel XS as well.

I say which ever you choose Canon or Nikon stick with it. Don't get a Nikon to learn on then later get a Canon. Lenses do not interchange. I have a Canon 60D, which I believe they now make a 70D which is a great camera. It's not a large frame camera but takes great picks. I have some large lenses Canon and Tamron and get great picks. I took a photo of Mt. McKinley from 60 miles away with a 200-500mm. lens and you can see the snow blowing over the peak! There is a great forum on photography, it's called "Photocamel.com". You might browse it before you take the leap!

The Rebel XS is old. I'm sure it has been replaced by a newer model.

I'm sure. It was being phased out for newer ones when I bought mine about 5 years ago.

    Still takes good shots.

FWIW. Canon has a loyalty program where you can give them a trade in Canon body (any, working or not) for a percentage discount off of a new camera.

A $5 film Canon from your local Goodwill can yield a much larger discount, even if it's non functional.

Good to know thanks guys. Ill keep looking into it. What lenses do you find yourself shooting with the most? The Nikon D3200 seems to come with a 18-50mm. But ill be looking into getting another lens (or two). So far Im thinking (with my limited knowledge):
    1. 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR - General Purpose
    2. Wide Angle/Ultra Wide Angle Lens?
    3. Macro?

Now, if I could stop trying to hunt down an unknown draw in my truck I could have some time to do some research...:frusty:

    Thanks for all the help.

I have a 18-135 and a 55-250mm. I use them the most. I shoot landscapes most of the time. I have a 60mm Prime lens from Tamron for macro and portrait shots. And then I have the 200-500mm for the distant shots it's also Tamron. One of these days I'm going to trade that one for the 400mm L-series Canon lens. It is a super piece of glass! But also is a chunk of change for a amateur.

What OP? You want to buy a Canon T4i with battery grip and a Sigma 30mm 1.4? I've got what you're looking for!! Only 4k shutter count. I've also got the nifty fifty (Canon 50mm 1.8 if you want that over the Sigma) :)

    http://portland.craigslist.org/wsc/pho/5142488837.html

    EDIT:
Kidding aside - I started out with the Canon Rebel XS (1000D) as well and used that camera for about 4 years or so before getting the T4i mentioned above. I still have both camera if interested in either. I can let go of the Rebel XS with the 18-55mm lens for cheap ($150ish) if you're interested.

What's your budget? When I first started I was all about the 'bokeh' but now I'm really liking the wide angle lens. I currently use a Canon 70D with the Canon 24mm f/1.4 L and Canon 70-200mm f/2.8
