did you get install kits too? sounds like your bearings will need to be replaced if lots of metal is rolling around in there.

    Damn. Great timing.

Did you suspect it was going to crap out when looking for new gears or is this purely coincidental?

If you need a moronic grunt to help with the gears I'd love to help and learn.

8.4 I think it's actually the driver side wheel bearing...I drained the diff oil, looked like diff oil, no chunks.

I have the driver axle out right now, the bearing is shot, I don't think the shaft is supposed to rotate in concentric circles...

    Purely coincidence.

Any body have any insight as to how to get the bearing retainer off the damn shaft? I have the snap ring removed and the book says "simply remove the bearing from shaft"...

They usually take about 5 tons pressure on our press at work.

Here is where I am at. I'm totally familiar with Dana axles, this is new ground for me.
Snap ring is off. No ABS stuff at all. What's next? I've tried smacking the shaft on a 2x6 to knock it loose...

I guess I need to know how to separate the backing plate so I can work the bearing on my press. I have a 10 ton and bearing removal crap so I should be able to do this, maybe..

btw, that is one healthy looking shaft, I never would have guessed it was similar in size to a Dana 60. Just a tad smaller in diameter. Very Nice. :)

You have to press it all off as one. I don't have a picture of the tool but it bolts to the bearing retainer and it presses the axle out of the backing plate/bearing all at once.

I built my own out of a old axle tube from a Tacoma that had a bent axle housing. It is at work though.

Well, fuckels...All right, I don't have that and sounds like a project in itself. Being a noob at this particular axle and seeing as how it's going in for service anyway in 11 days, I guess I'm biking it for a few, lol. Thanks for the info. :)

Yeah, that was kind of what I had pictured in my head from your description.
I have 3 other sets of motorized transportation. If I had that cool little device I'd go for it. But having to make one, well, unless i'm doing this frequently, I can wait. At the very least I will know I will have a fully rebuilt rear axle in two weeks.
Thanks for the insight, I appreciate it.

Anyone on the front range have a good recommendation for a powdercoater? I need to powdercoat a bed rack.

Sweet, I'll look them up. How do they price items? Size, weight, etc?
