    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
285 seems high even with 91. I think its the updated dual VVT-i engine specs. According to wiki, 278 ftlbs was the 91 octane rating for the Tacoma 1GR but we all know how wiki can be...

Im still on the doubtful side of these new "confirmed" numbers. They seem a bit low.

And where did u get those numbers from? On the dealer spec sheet it clearly states 270 HP @ 6000 rpm and 261 ft/lbs @ 4,800 rpm.

All bolt ons + tuning solution. Capable of running high 13's.
Remember that back in those days HP was measured differently than it is now. In 2006 there was a change in the measurement standard that affected positively and negatively engine output ratings for many automakers.

2003-2005 1GR-FE's were rated at 245hp / 282 ft-lbs using the old testing methods and 91 octane fuel.
    2006+ Single VVT-i 1GR-FE's are rated using the revised SAE J1349 standard, using 87 octane on the Tacoma and 06-09 4Runner (236hp / 266ft-lbs) and 91 octane on the 07-09 FJ Cruiser (239hp / 278 ft-lbs).

The owners manual states for increased performance, use 91 octane on the Tacoma and 4Runner, I would assume getting you at or near what the FJ is rated for.

So if you compare the 1GR before and after the revised testing methods it went fro 245hp / 282 ft-lbs to 239hp / 278 ft-lbs with no actual changes to the performance of the engine. Using 87 octane apparently drops you from the 239hp / 278 ft-lbs to the 236hp / 266ft-lbs rating seen on the Tacoma/4Runner from 2006.

My 2005 Tacoma was rated at 245 hp back then they used 91 octane and in 2006 they drop the hp ratings to 236 hp and started using 85 octane.

Because all of the current 3.5s have 20-30 less torque than HP, so if the new engine has 270 hp we can conclude that it will have around 240-250 torque and the 270 hp is at 6000 RPM.... But Toyota may have found a way to have more torque in a smaller engine, but I doubt it, I feel a version of this new 3.5 will be used across the line which saves Toyota lots of money but doesn't mean it's the best engine for a truck.... All dyno charts do show that a 3.5 has less torque but also have a flatter torque curve than the 4.0.... So it may still be a slight upgrade when you combine a flatter power curve, better gearing, better fuel injection and a better transmission.. So Toyota can use a smaller engine to produce the same overall power but increase the MPG...

But Toyota could have "tuned" a "truck" version that has different ports, intake and cams that can produce 270-300 lb of torque, but high torque engines are not as fuel efficient as a lower torque engines so it is doubtful. Plus it would be easier to mass produce a 300 torque 4.0 than a 3.5 and the 3.5 is the standard engine for the rest of the car line and cars don't need high torque. "car engine" low torque, "truck engine" high torque...

So best case would be 270 and that would be a good upgrade but 250 is more likely which will be better over all but not by much....

But we are still guessing, either way it will be a better engine with much better MPG but probably not a big upgrade in power....

Well right now, Ram, Ford and GM all have V8's that produce more torque than the Taco 4.0, yet get pretty much the same mpg. And GM's 6.2L has 460 lb/ft and is also rated at 15/21.

I agree there is no reason for Toyota to go to a smaller engine in fact there are lots of example where a larger more powerful engine gets better MPG than a smaller one, that is my disappointment with going to the 3.5 a smaller engine has to work harder to do the same work... But the gov knows whats best for us.... CAFE regs....... The 3.5 rocks in sedans like the accord but are a pig in the Pilot and Ridgeline.... SUV and trucks run better with a bigger engine, so far.....

I will say the 3.5l engine in my wife's 2015 Highlander is much stronger than the 4.0l in my 2012 FJ. Not sure how this translates to off-road use or towing though.
