This afternoon, I was out and got caught in some heavy rain that flooded a local street. I decided to give 4WD Low a try. When I put it in 4WD Low, the red light flashed on the dash with an accompanying (and annoying) on-off-on-off chime alarm. I went through the deep water fine, and it was definitely in low.

So does this light/chime stay on the whole time when in 4WD Low, or was it telling me something else, like maybe the front diff was not engaged?

How do you know it was engaged?

I did that once too, and I now understand that to mean that it was not engaged. The 4wd was definitely still engaged, but just wasn't in low. If you want to test, go to a straight away or a big empty parking lot. Engage the 4wd and pull straight forward a bit until you know that it is engaged. Then put it in Neutral, foot on the brake, turn the selector to 4Lo, put it in gear and pull forward. You should get a different indicator light to come on and you won't hear the chime.

At least this was my experience.

Sounds like you were not in neutral when 4lo was selected

when you are in 4 low... you KNOW you are in 4 low 2.56:1 low range is not something thats not noticed. OP follow the steps above cus you were not in 4 low. You must be under 3mph with the auto in neutral or manual with the clutch TO THE FLOOR to shift from 4hi to 4 low (ONLY after 4 hi is fully engaged).

You'll know when you're in low. You were still in 4 high.

Follow the instructions on the 'cheat' card in the clear slot on your visor to properly engage and disengage the 4 low feature.

I was indeed in low (gear reduction obvious) and the control switch was past 4WD high (green 4WD light on, yellow "Low" light next to it flashing and chime beeping). Also, the "VSC light off" indicator was on as well.

This brings up something I read in the Owner's Manual when I was bored. It says you should drive at least 10 miles per month in 4WD to keep things lubricated.

That and really the "10mi per month" is simply to use the actuators so they dont get frozen stuck.

I don't do 10 miles a month, but I do try to drop it in 4hi for at least a mile about once a month.

I thought it was to keep the gear oil from totally settling. Either way, I'd rather use it than lose it.
