2.7 liter automatic question

I am considering a Tacoma 2.7 liter with automatic because the wife doesn't drive manual. I would like to tow a boat around 2500 pounds. I don't need to go great distances but our local boat ramp is a little steeper than most. Would you expect the 2.7 liter engine to have enough power to pull a boat up such a ram and not hurt the tranny or engine??

Hello Gary.. I have a 2000 Toyota Tacoma Auto with 200k+ miles and i use it to tow my 2800lb boat, no problem... As far as getting up the Ramp, i just put it in Low (or 1), and it got it out without much stress.

You'd be suprised how strong these trucks are.. They are pure workhorses

My little Tacoma pulls my boat just fine. Loaded weight is around 2800lbs.

With the boat hooked up, the little 2.7 is a bit slow out of the gate, but it does the job just fine

 

My Carolina Skiff is not as heavy as your boat but my 5 lug pulls it just fine. I have pulled a friends fibergalss Triton that is much heavier down to the canals along Alligator Alley and it did so well the owner is talking about trading his six cylinder Dakota on a 4 cylinder Tacoma.

 

Boat ramps are all about traction. With a locker, you're pretty much set. We have a 7000 lb Four Winns that we pull with the 1500 Suburban. We've been beside a boat half the size or ours being pulled by a F250 diesel an he just sat there and smoked the tires while the little old Suburban sailed on by. He actually had to get out and lock the hubs and put it in 4WD to get his boat out.

And yes your truck will have plenty of power. Mine's a 2.4 and pulls a 1500-2000 lb mowing trailer daily with no problem.

 

Hey Thanks you guys for quick response. Sounds like these trucks have more power than meets the eye. last dumb question. Do you think the automatic transmission will be able to handle it? Since my wife would rather be driven than actually do the driving maybe I will go for the manual. Thanks again Gary

 

for what your using it for, dont see why you would need manual.. the auto will tow your boat without a hiccup

 

Unless, of course, you want the much cooler PreRunner...

The electronic limited slip differential on my '09 works very well on a ramp covered in slippery sea weed. I've also used a sand ramp on the side of a canal and been able to pull out the Skiff.

 

well im not quite sure what my issue is with the taco and towing... I trailered the bike (about 750lbs) with the trailer at about 100lbs and i couldnt go above 70 down the interstate.
