4 or 6 Cylinder

Hello,

What is the power difference between the 4 and 6 cylinder Tacoma? I know its something like 150HP versus 190 (I believe) but is it night and day difference? Is the 4 cylinder really a dog? I am really just looking for a commuter and have the ability to get a small load of dirt for the garden or haul stuff back from Home Depot etc.





The reason I ask is I have found two Tacoma's both extended cab in great condition:

• 1995 Tacoma, Dark Green, 172K miles, 2.7 liter. 4 cylinder, $4500
• 1995 Tacoma, Black, 124K Miles, 6 cylinder, $6800

The 4 is more in my price range than the 6. I also am not a huge fan of black trucks. I am trying to move quick because these trucks are becoming hard to find.

Any thoughts?

 

If you're going to do small tasks as you stated above then the 4 banger should suit your needs. BTW, it's spelled TACOMA, not Tachoma or Techoma.

I have driven the 4 with a 5 speed and its pretty good. If you are going to tow or carry heavier loads then I would def get the 6, but from what you have said the 4 should be fine. That and the 4 that I drove to OK from KY got over 25 mpg. My truck I would be happy to get 18 mpg..

 

The only thing I have to ad is that everything you want to do can be done with the v6. But not everything you may have to do can be done with the 4 cyl. It may be better to have more than you may always need, then not enough when you do need it. Just my $0.02. Good luck!

 

It is a 1995.5 and has a 2.7L it has to be 4WD or a motor swap.
Double check that. becuase noraml 1995.5 has 2.4L with 142HP.

I have a 1998 with a 2.4L and I can tow the 3500 with no issues at all.
but Gas milage when way down to 12 when pulling a full load up hills.

 

Yes, they both are 4WD. Forgot to mention that.

 

No point in paying for more than you need. I still think my 4 cylinder could have a little more power, but for the price i paid, I'm totally happy with it.

And, hey, if it's in the color you like, Why not?

 

my dad has a 3.4l t100 and i lucky to get 15 city my 4cyl. can get 19 city with a heavy ass foot.

 

i have a 3.4 03 and before the lift i was getting 22-23 mpg and after the lift with 255/85 tires i am getting 19-20mpg. i have noticed a bit of a power loss but mostly on long or steep hills. if you are planning on lifting i would say get the 3.4. otherwise the 2.7 will be wonderful. i used to drive an 89 pre-taco with the 4cyl and i towed a boat with it multiple times. they are hardy little trucks

 

I'd get the 4 cyl. It's like you said more in your price range, plus while hauling heavy loads you wouldn't be flying around driving fast anyway. I'm very happy with my 2.7 4 cyl. Enough power for me. Plus, I could care less who's behind me anyway. If I'm goin to slow up a hill or whatever, F_ck'em. I think it's a no brainer.... Good luck and post PIC's when you get a truck....

 

Dark green or black, they are both going to be a PITA to keep clean. Go for the 6, it has less miles on it and it will resale better down the road. Offer the person 6K and start negotiating from there.

 

The best way to decide is to take both for a test drive. I don't mind paying a little extra for fuel, for the added power of a V6.

 

If you are going to tow, get the 6.

otherwise, the 4cyl with the deckplate mod works just fine. I dont have any problems and I am running 32s on mine.

 

on a side note also throw a flowmaster 40 series delta in there. I did. I like it a lot.

the bottom line is it's what you can afford, and want.
I have no problem with my newer 2.7 hauling 1,200lbs. It's not a dog like the v-6 owners make it to be, you just have to get the rpm's up. Plue the i-4 is the based on the engine that ran forever!

but if you can, test drive both! Then make up your mind!

 

I have a 2010 regular cab 4 banger and I haul my bass boat up and down hills to the lake its slow going up the hills but it gets the job done.
