Dropped plastic axle oil plug in Rear Diff!!

i know I'm an idiot. I was attempting to figure out if I could fill the diff without removing the spare tire and pulled it out and realized I had lost the plastic small cap inside the diff. Does anyone see this as an issue? It's plastic and I'm thinking it will get chewed up pretty fast and be just small pieces nothing worse than the metal already in it but could possibly do some damage.
Anyone have any tips? Or tore apart their rear diff? Easy job?

Might be able to get a claw in there and pull it out.

Might work but I'm a bit timed strapped. Thinking about flooding it with water and hope it comes out. Could be bad for the diff though

 

You can buy those claws at a local place I'm sure. Canadian Tire probably sells them?

In hopes that the plastic part will come up to the top so he can grab it.

I've heard of worse ideas. I can't think of any, but I'm sure I have.

If you can't get it out manually you need to pop the diff and remove it.

 

Might have to try out Canadian alternative. Princess Auto. Love that Harbor Freight when I'm down south.

 

id let the gears chew up the plastic vs putting water in it...

 

That's what I'm thinking too. Not a good idea me thinks with the water.

 

The gears will grind it up pretty fast.

For me, I'd have that thought in the back of my head "What did I fuck up?"

 

im not sure how big this cap is honestly, but if itll chew it up quick it wont hurt anything. especially since its soft plastic, itll just drain out next time.

 

If it's the cap I'm thinking of it's about the size of a piece of candy corn.

 

If you're talking about the little cap on the bottle of fluid I did the same thing in my front diff


I just let it get chewed up by the gears and that was about 20k miles ago. No issues at all.

 

Yup bout the size of a ear plug. Soft plastic.
I was considering pulling it apart then looked at the process.......nope!

 

i wouldnt worry about it, he had no issues ^ so just run it.

 

Why use water? I would expect that it float just as well in the lube.
