Yeah, that 7700 lbs capacity is quite a nice number. Too bad @SwollenGoat they are not offering the Duramax on the WT trim. So if the upgrade is worth $3300 then it'll cost around ~$4500 more in Canada. A Z71 Colorado is already 42-43K without any options after tax in Canada. So add on some options and the Diesel and this is going to be a mid 50K truck up here .

If it returns good numbers and holds up well I might need to look at GM in 5 years.

 

How have the Duramax's in the Silverado/Sierras held up? Duramax is not an in house brand.

 

I'd say they've done ok. Not as well as a Cummins but a lot of the durability on the full sized trucks comes with the Allison transmission. Overall the GM 3/4 ton is a solid truck.

It's not really relevant to compare two totally different diesels though. Maybe if both shared most of their design and components, sure, but these two engines basically share the name Duramax and the same manufacturer. That's all.

 

True, but that is all we have to compare for now. Except for the Ecodiesel, which has gotten very poor marks for QDR.

 

Buy a Taco, drive it for 5 years, at which point there should be some solid reports on the chevy/durmax QDR, sell Taco at it's super high resale value, buy Chevy Colorado.

 

Very well. I hope that this new 4 cyl will be built to the same standards. There are Duramax diesels with 500k to 1 million plus miles. We haven't had any major issues with our 2005 and it sees pretty heavy towing use. The 6.6L platform has been good thats why its been around for 15+ years.

Can't compare a shit Italian diesel to a USA/Japanese produced engine.

 

I already have a Tacoma. TRD Sport with the supercharger. I was going to hang on to it for at least 5 more years.

I have to admit it's somewhat tempting to revisit the Colorado. I didn't like the gas job all that much for various reasons but if the Diesel truck can get 30 mpg overall like some of the fanboys are saying and still have fairly good real world performance I'd be tempted to trade up once the engine has proven itself.

 

Isn't this pretty much the same motor used in the international versions of the Colorado? It's not like it's totally new. I am sure there are more emissions junk bolted to the engine but it's been around a while.

 

Diesels usually meet or exceed rated mpgs. At least EPA ratings, I believe Canadian ratings are different. We all know the eco diesel Ram is trash but it can return some pretty good mpgs when its running properly. The Colorado being a smaller 4 cylinder should be able to average 30 in normal driving. The goal for this truck is to blow away the competition in the mpg department. Why even release it if it cant get substantially more than the 3.6L and new Tacoma.

 

It's the emissions junk I'd be worried about. The international version doesn't have urea injection and uses a different EGR system with a different filter. Just those changes have caused some engines issues in north america.

Plus, the Colorado still has water leaks and other issues I'd like to see addressed.

 

I bet the Colorado forum guys are stoked. 7700 lbs is a hefty trailer.

lol. I like power as much as the next guy but I prefer a small truck. Makes a good compromise for those who use their trucks as trucks but also use them as every day transportation.

 

Diesel or not, if you are sticking a 7700 lbs trailer behind a midsized you are not going to have a fun time with wind or passing.

If anything that rating means the truck should be better at towing things in the 4-6K lbs range where the current gas offerings struggle.

 

They were pretty stoked for a 327 in the Colorado too. I hope this actually sells versus the V8 that everyone begged for online that helped kill the Colorado off last time around.

 

Agreed. I wouldn't tow 7k regularly with a mid size. But having that kind of towing capacity in your back pocket is always nice.

 

I agree, but the improved tow rating means better overall towing for that 4,000 lb trailer you might pull.

 

Interesting, and the modern diesels may all do this, but their BabyMAX allows BioDiesel, which I think is pretty cool.
