I'm in. I'm a new ham... So someone might have to hold my hand and explain how this damn thing works.

Both. I've got a Kenwood 281 installed and a Baofeng handheld. I've managed to begin programming the mobile but maybe the repeaters around me are quiet. The handheld I got today and is a total mystery.

    True.

If it was a prc117g or one of the old 119s I'd be set!

I know with either radio I'm capable of receiving 153... But Idk how I'd respond, etc. It's only been a week since I got my license.. I'm sure I'll sort it out eventually. I'll sure see you guys on Friday though!
    The wife agreed to go

Did you tune (cut) your antenna? You will hear us but may not be able respond otherwise. The 151.680 freq we use doesn't use tones so just plug it in and you're good. The 2 meter (repeater) stuff is a different animal. You can use an off the shelf antenna for that (no tuning). I carry two different antennas for this reason.
