Black PreRunner fender flares

Has anyone taken their black plastic PreRunner fender flares off, scuffed them up, and then tried some of that Krylon Plastic paint on them. I have been trying to bring them back to life with Mother's Back to Black, but...... it only lasts for a couple of days and is gone after they get wet. Ideas?

I wouldn't see why they wouldn't work especially if you scuffed them up first before painting them.

 

i have that same prob. and am curious to see what people have done to correct/improve the look of the flares. i have waxed them and put on armoral but only lasts a couple of days.

 

I did a couple coats of the mother's back to black, buffing it in good, and it stayed shiny and black for a good couple weeks. Untill I re-waxed it yesterday and got some on them... But I applyed it again, and its been looken good. They were really grey looken before. But I would like to here if the paint works/helps.

 

i was goign to try that paint that is made for plastic. ill let you guys know im going to take them off soon.

I was trying to take mine off my 01 taco and they are attached threw the metal, i was pissed.
I am going to have my entire truck painted and have the painters just paint over the flares, you think that would work?
can you find t paint for plastic at homedepot?
if so i will try it this week and tell you how it goes

 

im pretty sure home depot has paint for plastic.....but dont forget adhesion promoter also.......as it will help the paint stay on alot better than only paint will.

 

Don't laugh, but Kiwi black shoe polish on black plastic flares has worked well for me over the past twenty years.

 

How long does it last, and is it affected by rain / washing?

 

After 100's of applications of armorall etc. I had them Extreme Line X'd when I did the rest of the truck. No more fade. The extreme is the new product.

 

Damn!!! I wonder what it would cost to just have my flares sprayed with the Line-X.

 

that looks killer man. one of the best looking first gens i have seen. the line-x looks rugged as hell on there too.

 

Durability should be good, on my old 96 the one place Line X can't hold up is sliders, but for fenders, brobably do just fine.

If you carry in the flares I'd guess $150

 

Appreciate that, this look is something I had in my head for a long time before I finally put the money down and did it. The wheels were actually my second after market set, my first MB's Chrome and Alluminum just never looked right. The hood was done to lay out the same as a Magna Bra which I previously had, they added the bit above the side lights to tie it all together. This is my 4th Toy, my 2nd Tacoma, unles a time comes that I need a heavy hauler, I'll stick with a Tacoma.

They are screwed to the inner fender lip, and clipped to fasteners that are in the outer fender skin. IF you are going to get the truck painted and want the flares painted also, remove the flares and have them prepped and painted separately with the same paint but with an added flex additive, then re-install with either the rubber edge lips cleaned well or replaced. If yours has the rubber edge lips versus the hard plastic ones, they will not take paint. The edge pieces are available in black and a light grey for certain colors of trucks.

EDIT: the LineX is even better, even if the flares is all you use it on.

New Restorer, nice and cheap, wish I had that a couple years ago, would have saved me armorall'ing over and over. Still would have done the LineX as that was the plan from long ago.

 

Check out the wonders of the Magic Eraser! A pack of four cost me about about $5.00. This project took me all of about 10 minutes last night and I only used one Magic Eraser. I'm going to hit it a few more times for good measure, you can still see some "grey" around the seal.

The AFTER picture of the flare does not have any "store bought" shine enhancing product applied (Black Magic, Back to Black, 303 ect.). The Magic Eraser is slightly abrasive, and removes the built up wax and oxidation that causes our flares to become grey over time. It also worked wonders on my unpainted door handles and my "faded" lower bumper as well. I may follow up with some 303 on there for good measure, but I was impressed with the result regardless.
