I'm still confused, I obviously missed something juicy and dramatic. What are the other 4 accounts?

Looks like same engine in the RX is only 2 mpg better than 2nd gen Taco, not sure about the weight difference.

Ya I don't get this, they say they even have a new emission system that eliminates 99% of NoX or whatever it is. Sounds like there pretty close to be able to meet emission standards.

All bolt ons + tuning solution. Capable of running high 13's.
What is coming is a 2.0lt Turbo four. Is already being announced for the camry. Is just a matter of time now to roll it out accross the toyota line up.

New IS 200t that engine is rated at, notice how low that torque is available:

    241 hp @ 4,800-5,600 rpm/ 258 lb-ft @ 1,650-4,000 rpm

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
Also have to factor in cost of manufacturing. Do they ship it from overseas? Can their overseas plants support US demand? Do they open a new plant? Lots of money involved if they ever do bring the GD to the US.

GM is bringing in the Diesel because they are trying to grow their position in the market. When you want to grow your position you try to do things the competition isn't, whether or not the data says it will pan out. That's just doing good business. Taking a shot in the dark like bringing a Diesel midsize to North America is an attempt to gain some competitiveness that GM desperately needs considering the company has some of the lowest profit margins out there.

Toyota owns the mid sized market. Look, the 10 year old Tacoma still outsold the twins by a huge chunk. If Toyota feels threatened at all by GM's Diesel they will bring their own. They are in the position to let someone else take the first leap and then they can follow up if necessary.

As for the new Toyota engine eliminating 99% of NOx, that's still not enough to pass tier 4 from what I've heard. Tier 4 mandated a 90% drop FROM TIER 3 #'s. IIRC Tier 3 was already maxing out what an engine could do with technology to eliminate as much NOx as possible, and Tier 4 basically said you have to do better than that. 90% better in fact.

This link talks about offroad standards, but the first paragraph goes through the history of the tier system in the USA.

With a few tweaks like a performance oriented tune + more boost should be enough to put it in the 300s in both figures.
