SOLVED! Post 2853 Leaking Injectors, Dealer Techs Rock! Extended Cranking after Engine Swap 3.4L 5vz

Shit. I just thought of the crappiest thing about getting an Outback. We'd have to start ALL OVER with finding the best possible mechanic, since noahpete is Toyota only. I know he's worked on plenty of other stuff, but I don't think he likes to really. Argh. That part blows.

I would love to never ever ever mechanic shop again ever forever the end. Period. For real.

Yes. Yes you will. It would DEFINITELY be replaced and NOT repaired and kept if we were getting an Outback.

May I say how much I love that this is your primary concern Keakar? Are you a pyro or something?

 

just keep in mind, it might be ok to go "off road" but your not going to be going on those 4 wheel trails in the outback, remember the ground clearance issues that caused you to rule out the outback in the first place? or are you just wanting to get a "trunk monkey"?

and if anyone likes a good southern Jambalaya, I have a good recipe here:

Pugnut's Jambalaya

Ingredients:
• 2-3 lb cut up pork meat or pork roast (boston butt) (you need the fat)
• 1-1 1/2 lb (4 links) smoked sausage (cut 1/4" thick slices then cut in half)
• 1 lb (2-3 links) andouille sausage (cut 1/4" thick slices then cut in half)
• 2-3 large yellow onions (chopped) (about 2-3 cups)
• 2 cups shallots (chopped)
• 1 large or 2 medium green bell pepper (chopped)
• 2-3 heaping tablespoons minced garlic
• 1 regular can brown beef gravy
• 1 regular 15 oz can chopped / diced tomatoes (with juices)
• 1 regular 15 oz can chopped mushrooms pieces (without juices)
• 1 regular 15 oz can tomato sauce (not the paste)
• 3 teaspoons worcestershire sauce
• 4 level teaspoon Salt
• 4 cups long grain white rice (2 lb bag)
• 5 cups water
• 2-3 teaspoons Kitchen bouquet (just for color)

Directions:
If you have a whole pork roast then its a lot easier to cut up uniformly if you first cut it in half long ways or separate into a few sections for even cooking and bake it in a pre-heated oven for about 45 minutes @ 350* but you do NOT want to cook it beyond medium rare.

Brown the cut up pork meat in a large gumbo pot on high heat to finish cooking until its browned and no longer pink. Then add the onions, garlic, and shallots and simmer on medium heat until the onions turn clear. now add everything else into pot except the rice and Kitchen Bouquet and continue to cook on medium heat for 20 minutes stirring frequently.

Now add the Kitchen Bouquet and turn on high heat bringing to a rapid boil while stirring constantly. Now add the rice and reduce to medium heat and stir constantly to prevent sticking. when all the water is gone (you can see the dry bottom when jambalaya is pulled to the side with spoon) then cover the pot and put it into a preheated oven @ 350 degrees for 45 minutes and then It's ready to eat.

 

Yum. Eric loves stuff like this. I hate peppers, but everything else about it sounds awesome.

I know, an Outback is a far cry from a Taco or even a 4R in terms of where it can go. But it definitely has better capabilities than a Civic, yet gets us reasonable MPG. I think I was hoping the MPG in the 4R would be better than the Taco, but it's the same. And over the coming years that MPG difference could really add up to a big $ number fast. Besides, the hope is that whatever car we get never has to "fill in" for the Taco at all, or only for a short time. The hope is that we are never without it for SIX FREAKING MONTHS BECAUSE SOMEBODY CHOSE TO NOT DO THEIR JOB Not that I'm still sore on that topic or anything Anyway - point is, worst case, hopefully this vehicle would only cover us in short term circumstances during Taco repairs that take a NORMAL amount of time, or (sniff, sniff) a few weeks/months to find a replacement Taco someday. And I think it'd cover our short term needs - maybe not quite as well as a 2nd Taco would, but well enough, and certainly much better than another Civic of any year would.

Keep those naysayer opinions coming y'all. Tell me why an Outback is a terrible idea for us. I need the whole devil's advocate thing right now TW, so I have minimal regrets later!!

 

it doesn't hurt it at all to leave the bell peppers out of it but DONT USE PORK LOIN, you need to pork fat for flavor so be sure its got fat on the pork, this aint no damn health food meal lol.

I don't know a fucking thing about these outback cars. I do know they just scream "yuppy on board".

What do these things so for mpg?

I know the 4runner will get 17, maybe 20 on long trips.

4Runners get an average of 16, and a 5-10 yr old Outback gets ~23 average. The Civic gets 26. My freaking 1993 Civic gets better MPG than a 2008 Accord! Learned that a couple days ago on that fueleconomy.gov site. Pretty cool site, lets you compare up to 4 vehicles and see exactly what kind of MPG you get and how it all adds up.

I know, I agree, Subarus are kind of yuppy-ish looking. But honestly, I could care less about whether I look tough, yuppy, or whatever in between. And I don't really care if what I'm driving is just like what every other driver has or not. I'm going for what is capable of safely/comfortably getting me to as many of the places I want to go as possible, in the most economical way possible. The looks thing is kinda, meh, who cares. They aren't ugly IMO. They just aren't rugged and super cool either, like a 4R or Taco. But don't worry, we'll still look tough and bad ass with the Taco!! They really are quite practical for groceries and dogs.

NOT getting a Ford anything. That's for sure. Not getting a smart car either. No mini anything. We are not mini people.

No recommendation for Tundra. It is a purpose vehicle. It is meant for towing and it does that very well. It is great on the xway as well, but we just don't take long trips to really justify it for that alone. I do much towing so I need it. Most would not be able to make the numbers work.

Funny, I'm going fishing tomorrow. I calculated the difference in fuel. I would spend $6 more taking the Tundra. Not a deal breaker at all, but the Tacoma is so much more fun driving the Forrest trails.

On a side note, I got cold approached by a dude with a 2nd gen, 4 door Tacoma yesterday. He wanted to check out my bumper. He really wants an ARB bull bar and seen my clone. I was in a hurry, so I just told him to look it over as long as he wanted. He was surprised when I told him I built it myself. I took it as a compliment.

Harley Davidson, Suzuki, Yamaha, any of those three would be good choices

but seriously,

if you don't want the 4runner, fine then, but you would be crazy not to buy it, fix the few issues it has, and then turn around and sell it for a quick $4k-$5k profit, unless you don't want an extra $4k-$5k that is. look at it as an investment to flip for more money if nothing else and in the mean time you might just discover its not that expensive to own as you think.

I am getting 44 mpg in my 13 focus, my "work" car...and we just love the handling and performance of the turbo Subaru WRX. But get what works for you.

I am single( perhaps being single allows me to do this) and have 4 vehicles street legal Plus the other 10 or so.

If you need a commuter car by one of those little tiny things that folds up into a brief case and you sit it under your desk.

The hassle of getting cozy with new parts people and mechanics might make someone else a bit jealous be a real shame to see your work orders keep getting moved to the bottom of the stack.

Then the lot person doing your service work.

 

OK, we're now thinking we're getting another Civic. Like, this weekend. Being down to 1 car AGAIN is sooooooooooooooo not a fun time, and I refuse to allow Eric to even look into the brakes issue, because I know exactly where that evil snowball will head next. He was googling it last night on the sly and I busted him. WE ARE DONE. Then my worrying ways have me thinking, OMG, what if the Taco dumps on us right now too???

We gotta find a decent Civ for less than $10K, and fast. 4 doors, and I'm hoping to avoid completely hating the car if we insist on finding one that is one of my fave colors - blue or black. Outside of hybrids and electric cars, the Civics just kick ass on MPG. And we all know they last FOREVER. The value is there for sure, when you consider how they are priced and HOW LONG YOU CAN DRIVE THEM INTO THE GROUND, RIGHT UP TIL THE SEAT CRUMBLES INTO NOTHING. And space/luxury/off road wise? They suck. But we'll rely on Taco for that for now, and hope like hell it gives us at least a few good years, and by not breaking the bank with a cheap little Civ (hoping to find something around $7-8K), then we can begin preparing financially for our next Taco, the vehicle we REALLY want more of!! Because it WOULD be seriously sweet to have his and hers Tacos someday. It could happen. But now is just not the right time for it. Gotta get another little good commuter on board first.
