My #1 turd. "Meli girl". She's nine now, found her at the humane society when I left the Navy. One of her tricks is letting me put stuff on her head. In a one-upmanship competition with another friend's dog I snapped this pic.

Man you have a good looking Toller!

Our dog passed away recently. I think towards the end of the summer we will get a new pup, but I cant afford a toller right now while I'm still in school

    Don,

Most people don't get it, when you tell them, bird hunting is about watching the dogs work.

What a great job backing! 5 & 7 what a perfect brace. The Toller sitting in the 12 lb. keg of Red Dot gunpowder in my avatar is 12 now retired from hunting, the pup is only 8 months old. This year I expect the pup to be obedient in the woods and fields but mainly have fun. Your absolutely correct it is all about the dogs for everyone I know that bird hunts. Neither of my sons want to bird hunt and tell me it is too much like work, hopefully someday down the road they will understand. For a few years my youngest did hunt with his grandfather and I, 3 generations of us bird hunting together is something I will cherish forever.

I did try a 5 year old rescue English Setter for a couple of months last fall. I do miss the point, had a Setter a long time ago, but this dog was a big ranger and 400-500 yards in the grouse woods drove me nuts especially with the large number of wolves around now. It was even a bit far for me on the prairie. He ended up in a good hunting home in North Dakota where he can run to his hearts content and his new owner hunts on horseback. Despite my friends telling me bird dogs point and toilets flush I went back to a flusher and am happy.

One of the last hunts with the old boy was special, I saw him get birdie so was ready for the ruff grouse to flush. It flushed, I shot and it fell but the dog ran past it. Thought that was strange he never blinked a bird before and then I noticed another grouse fluttering on the forest floor liter past the first one. My one and only scotch double on grouse ever. 1 shot 2 birds. And a special dog that got it done.

Thank you, I have been blessed with my Tollers! I hear you, both times I got one I thought I couldn't afford it. But have been able to pull it off and have absolutely no regrets.
