4 Cylinder Oil Change

I just did my first oil change at home on my '09. I went with Mobile 1 5W-20 synthetic and the

$54 90915-YZZD3 Oil Filter 1 Case (QTY 10)

90915-YZZD3 Toyota filter. It was pretty easy, there's plenty of room under there to get at the drain plug and the filter.

My only complaint: the filter is straight up, but before I got it off I still had oil running down the length of my arm. Does anyone have a trick for getting the filter off without spilling oil all over?

 

I had limited success with a plastic bag over the components to catch the oil. Place some absorbant shop towels on it. Use a latex glove to spin off the filter then just tried my best to minimize spillage. Also i pulled downward on the bag to make a channel, placed a hole in the bag over the waste oil collector.

 

Both times I changed mine I just kept a steady hand to keep the filter level and it worked well enough for me

 

Use rubber shop gloves and unscrew the filter a little bit and let it drain into the oil drain pan.

 

Exactly...once it stops draining...finish taking it off. If you have a lifted truck you don't even have to jack it up....easiest oil change ever.

Just starting doing my first change on my truck. Thought I let it drain long enough. About ten minutes. Still had oil spillage before it came off the threads. Letting it drain more now before I try again. It did drain more from the plug when I broke the seal on the filter. Oil techs must hate this vehicle!

 

Just put some latex gloves on and unscrew the filter all the way off and put the filter on the oil collection pan. It's an oil change, your going to get oil on you.

 

Naw thats a messy ass design. I changed oil professionally in the past. You can stay clean if you want. I am doing this on my back at an apartment. Not a lot of room. That position give you almost no chance of getting it to the drain pain reasonably. I can't be making a huge ass mess in my spot. I was using my smaller diameter pan. Fixed now. If I was working in a shop and I had to wait that long for a car to drain I'd be in trouble. If your taking this to a shop for oil changes, your bringing some of your old oil home with you. I do work in a hospital and got gloves. Thought the problem was with drain time.

 

Being the first time on that truck I will do a better job next time. Maybe I will lance a hole in the bottom next time

 

use one of the big yellow antifreeze pans with the spout, it'll make life alot easier. Those little pans are for the birds.

 

When on a dealer ship quick lube team we had to make thing clean.

So we got out cardboard, the cut it to fit so al the oil drained to 1 location.
Then once we has the right shape, we moved to plastic boards.
Melted and molded it to fit. So we could reuse it.

This was to cut down on Spraying the engain bay with Brake cleaner or a power washers. We have 15 minutes to get the oil change done and inspect the cars and truck. It was Quick lube..... not messy dirty lube...

Also if you has a mid 90's camery you can punch a hole in the filter and loosen it a bit and have all the oil drain back.

Plastic bags can work, but the oil needs to be cool and not freeway hot.
Rubber gloves help....

make sure to Fill your Spare tire with Air once every 3 months.

 

Exactly how much oil does the 2.7L engine take after an oil & filter change?

 

I did 6 quarts. Manual calls for 6.1 with filter change or 5.4 without.

 

You can use a punch or screwdriver to knock a hole in the bottom of the filter to drain it first. Learned that trick from a diesel mechanic.

 

I got a piece of cardboard about 8 inches wide and 18 inches long and curved it so it was like a half-pipe channel, and folded one of the ends over about 1/2 inch. Then I loosened the filter a bit (but still gasket-seated) and wedged the folded end of the cardboard channel up behind the filter, then unscrewed the filter enough to break the gasket seal so the leakage dribbled down the cardboard channel into the oil pan. Wiggled the oil filter to splash out any more oil, then left it alone for a few minutes then carefully removed the filter. Yes I got a little oil on my hand but the garage floor is still nice and clean. Hope this helps someone. Yes it is slightly awkward to access the filter depending on the ground clearance. Next time I will jack it up a little bit for some more working room.

 

I tried this (minus the gloves) when I did my 2nd oil change today. It worked much better! I let the filter drip into the pan for a couple minutes until it stopped. Then I just kept it straight up as I could when I removed it. It was much cleaner this time. Thanks for the advice!
