On Tacomaworld.... In a thread for bitching lol.

Wait 3 years. Then the only people bitching about the torque numbers will be those that still have a 2nd gen....

I think the FJCruiser is one of the ugliest SUV's ever built. That being said, I would like to own and drive one.

Doubtful. Maybe a refreshed grill in 4 or 5 years. The current Ford Super Duty has not had a clean sheet redesign since 1998.

When you get into it, you realize it's a 3rd gen. Same cab size, same cab in the most part, but the rest of the truck is pretty much new. I'm not going to say it's from scratch, because it's clearly not, but everything that moves has been adjusted or swapped out in some way from what I saw and from the drivers seat it's not a 2nd gen.

I can understand the hate but I don't understand the "it's not a true 3rd gen" arguement. What else would need to change to make it a true third gen? New engine, new transmission, new 4wd features, new interior....what else needed to change? A new frame? Completely new exterior styling? Yes, it still looks like a mid size truck but it's supposed to. Otherwise it would be a completely different product and not a refresh at all.

Some perspective on the rumored 270hp number...

The GM/Chevy 3.6L LFX makes 305 hp peak, at 6800 rpm. If the Tacoma 2GR is indeed 270 hp at 6000 rpm, how do they really compare?

    29zyl1z_f0d8fa0760bcad59cc2b47dd3320b3a88d25215a.jpg

I took a look at a dyno of the LFX. Found a (relative) drivetrain loss of 23% (231 / 305 = 0.77). Assuming a similar loss for the Toyota (for the sake of comparison), that means 0.77 * 270hp for approx. 208hp at 6000 RPM. Now looking at the blue line on the GM dyno, I see the LFX makes ~217hp at 6000 RPM.

Doesn't mean much, but I found it interesting that on one of the few data points we might have, the LFX vs rumored 2GR might only have a ~10hp difference at the same RPM.

I think data on the 2GR's power delivery/torque curve will make this a very interesting discussion in a few months.

For your answer, please see the difference between Gen1 and Gen2.

That will constitute a "new gen". Complete redesign.

I have a feeling the 3rd gen will be given the nickname "stump puller" after new owners experience the crazy torque.

Mid September delivery in most of the USA. Early October for Canada. That's why the guys from Cochrane Toyota and Toyota Canada were saying.

They couldn't tell if we were getting any TRD OR DC's yet in Canada. They aren't in the system but, according to the dealer, that's pretty normal for a new model.

    Sorry :D.

So we are on to that now. I wonder if we had of got a total redesign but the 1GR inside with the old transmission if people would call it a 2.5 gen, because honestly having an older engine would of disappointed me more.

    ha ha!

oooh...I am sure the 3rd gen will be fine, typical Toyota fashion....marginal improvements, nothing Earth shattering. Their trucks are more of an afterthought. They care more about hybrids and hydrogen power. Which it would be kinda cool if it trickled into the truck segment. You can get ALL OF THE TORQUES with an electric motor. ;) :p

I stumbled upon this yesterday...imagine if we moved electric motors to the wheels.

Why? All we wanted was better mpg and to get rid of the stupid angular, asymmetric rear wheel wells and that's what we've got. Good truck just got better.

Ok, so you basically just said, I want a "fixed 2nd Gen". And, subsequently, that's what Toyota has produced.

Why do you consider the 2nd Gen broken? :D

Seems to me that none of the pickups (Ford, Chevy, etc) have changed much in profile design. Guess they are all just fixes to the past generation.
