I love my first gen, but no ABS, no Traction Control, minimal airbags, and every-so-often an issue means it may be time to upgrade.

Crazy isn't it!? I almost convinced myself to buy a fullsize...thought of a RCSB so I wouldn't loose too much in offroad capability.

I have been waiting and waiting on Toyota to make something stellar...looks like I will have to keep on waiting. I am sure the 3rd gen will be fine (as I am sounding like a broken record) doesn't really excite me...like I just "have" to have it.

Those are the things I love about my 1st gen...it has just "enough" tech without being overboard.

Tech adds complexity with out lowering the cost of operation. Cost of operation is all that matters.

The narrow track on the gen 1's makes the ride rough as shit too.

So, "everyone" wants awesome mgp's, round wheel arches, lots of cost adding tech, a smooth ride....and don't care how it looks.

Sounds like a car to me. Maybe chebbie will reintroduce the el camino over here in the ol' USA.

Edit: Forgot to add inappropriate amounts of power that will rarely get used.

Considering a roll over is basically the most likely outcome from any accident with a truck I consider curtain airbags a must. Same with the side impact, because you are way more likely to get t-boned then end up in a head on collision.
That's a pretty general statement. Technology is basically what has yielded 20 mpg trucks.

I'm surprised how many guys want to go back to the 80's death traps with no safety features at all.

Maybe Darwinism wouldn't be such a bad idea...

Well, we are currently building/buying cars to compensate for poor driving skills and poor choices. Its kinda like expecting a cast to fix a broken bone.

gotta say the GMs are sharp looking.

shiiiiiit....mine is even rougher than stock....Camburg coil overs up front and OME HD's on the rear. I don't mind the rough ride.

1st gen is almost perfect to me, could use a little more power and better mpg...but hey...it does 95% of what I want it to do.

I ride dirt bikes, having just an enclosed structure around me is like a luxury for safety... ;)

The issue I have with the "safety equipment" is that the government is FORCING the manufacturers to meet these standards, which is adding cost to the vehicles. This cost is then passed to EVERY consumer, whether it gets used or not. (I understand there isn't much way around this....cost gets passed to the end user in every way possible). However, no models are really offered WITHOUT these things.

I want to see someone on a trail with one. All of those knicknack addons will be torn off and left somewhere between the start and the end of the trail.

They may as well call it the "mall boss internet wheeling" edition.
    LOL.

Yes I know I grew up that way too. I don't like the argument though that better safety features mean people drive worse. They aren't related. Good drivers are just as likely to die in an accident as the bad driver that hit them, and bad drivers have always been around.

I'm fine with taking my risks on a dirt bike, but there is a reason I will never get on a street bike on a highway again. I like knowing, even in my Tacoma, that if someone chooses to take me out there is a good chance I will walk away and get to play with my daughter as she grows up with two working legs.

Sorry if that's a bit much, but safety and getting home everyday are pretty big things to me. I've had way to many people I know pass away lately on motorbikes or other things because of someone elses mistake and their incorrect assumption that they were only putting themselves at risk. Now their family is missing someone who was not only bringing in the bacon, but who had a kid that isn't old enough yet to even know why daddy isn't coming home.

And none should be offered without those features. See above.

Like the knee impact bumper. Breaking a femur can be a death sentence. Blowing out a knee is something you can recover from with what is really a minor surgery. It's not just safety features for your protection, it's for everyone around you and the people you love.

My initial point of fixing broken bones with casts applies here. Instead of making these vehicles with expensive bubbles, why not better train the individuals who are in control of them.

For instance. For me to get my license, I simply walked in and took a 10 question, multiple choice quiz.

That licensed me to drive anywhere in the country, moving multiple tons of steel at any speed. Does that make ANY sense? Lets just forget the fact that I was a 16 year old boy, with priorities WAY out of whack, and testosterone on stand by in unrivaled amounts ready to induce an adrenaline rush. 10, multiple choice questions consisting of, "What shape and color is a Stop Sign?"

Up here they road test for your full license and graduated license and basically have a guarantee that you will be taking the test at least twice.

It's pretty complex actually. First you take a 25 question test, which is focused on scenarios and not signage, to get a learners permit that is only legal when you are driving with someone else and doesn't let you drive at night. Then, after a year with that, you can take a half hour to hour road test to get a graduated license that still has a ton of restrictions, including no blood alcohol at all plus a curfew. After another set period of time you can then go for another hour road test and get a real license.

Oh, and for new drivers collision insurances is easily $3K. To get it lower they need 3 years of driving experience or they have to take a full defensive driving course plus drivers education, which is a 6 week course with 2 classes a week.

After all that, we still have bad drivers. Most of it is immaturity and ADD style driving. Cars need to be safer. The other way doesn't get through to everyone and unless we are going to start taking licenses away for distracted driving or putting computers in the cars to stop speeding simple teaching methods aren't going to work
