this is going no where so whats in the oven?

I would have bought the white 4runner, fixed it up, and then, if I still didnt want to keep it, sell it for $5-$6 profit and had something to drive while you decide what to buy.

You smart ass!! C'mon, clearly we are accomplishing a lot here!!

Really, though, thanks to all you guys for talking to me about this crap. Just like it was with the Taco problems, it's really helpful to have a sounding board to help me straighten out what the hell it is I want!!

What are you cooking Keakar? I still haven't made the crabcakes, need to try them soon :)

Our Sonata got 32 mpg combined. Closer to 36 mpg on the highway. The Elantra should gain another 10% over that. The only thing that car ever needed was new air filters because my wife kept parking in the coulees near work and the mice would chew right through the guard to get to the air filter. Some chickenwire fixed that problem quick.

The problem is, either way, you don't know you have the right car until years latter. At least with the new car there is warranty and lemon laws to protect you. With used you get a shorter, if any, warranty and no protection from getting screwed.

I don't know, a buddy of mine has that digital dash civic that he can't even read at night. Every car has a certain amount of bad models. Plus it's all in the dealer. Some shops are good and some are bad. My local Ford is awesome so we keep going back to them. Plus I haven't personally had an issue with a Ford I've owned.

we know what you want, but you don't.

you want a black or blue 4 door car with less then 50k miles on it at the price of 10 year old cars with 150k miles on them. then you want luxury package and a specific color. it has to be automatic and only one or two brand models despite you saying you will look at anything. even when we do find every single thing you asked for you see some normal item on a carfax or just because it isn't a major dealership selling it and dismiss it offhand. not a criticism but just a wrap up of whats been going on with your search so far. what was wrong with the corolla except it had no sunroof? which should have been a plus, not a reason to scratch it off the list :notsure: just sayin I don't know how to help you anymore if you want a brand new car but used car price.

for everything said above it makes no sense for you NOT to buy a brand new corolla but you never even looked at what the notes would cost and I bet they are exactly the same as any used car you buy, just and extra year or two of notes to pay. the reason is new cars they will finance for 5 or 6 years but with used cars they usually will only finance it for 3 or 4 years max.

We can't have that now though. That dude is shopping for his replacement car first. We haven't told him yet that we don't think we want it, we need to do that pretty soon if we are sure. It's tough, because there's lots of good things about it. But the MPG are horrible, as bad as the Taco. So I feel like, may as well get a 2nd Taco if we're gonna not give a shit about gas, since that's what we'd really love to have. Sure, that Runner is a great price for what it is, but we'd have to spend some to modify it to be what we wanted it to be, and it still wouldn't be a Taco (our 1st choice) and we'd go broke at the pump. Just wasn't making sense for us in the big picture.

go ahead, throw a pie at me, Im hungry :hungry:

I get where you are but you have to compromise, your not going to get everything on your wish list unless you buy it new because its not very realistic to expect to get all that in your price range.

can you afford a $300 a month note? or a $400 a month note? my $30k truck had a $390 a month note for 6 years so new car notes are not as high as you think they are, they spread them out over more years so often the notes are less each month then a used car will be. I bet a 2015 corolla would have around a $250 a month note if you did it for 6 years

It's not true though!! The credit union was quoting 3.9% for a 5 yr loan. They might offer even lower rates for a 3 or 4 yr loan. 3.9% is not terrible.

And I read on the Toyota website about offers of 2.9% when you purchase one of their certified used vehicles. I found 4 of those vehicles that would work for us. The Honda dealer said they'd do 2.9% with good credit. Those are not bad rates, and they are all on 5 yr loans!

If a brand new Civic or Corolla was $250 a month, I'd consider it.

What exactly DO you gain buying new? I mean, I know we've been discussing that in general, but what would a new car warranty on something like a Corolla cover?

OMG everything, its new virgin untouched unmolested, nobody had kids throwing up in it for that strange smell it has in summer or scratches and tears in carpet and interior. it will still look and be new in ten years and nothing will need to be fixed or repaired, hell you probably wont even need tyo open the hood for 10 years. no mysterious hack repairs or shady parts to find anywhere and best of all, peace of mind knowing the only thing ever don't to that car is what YOU did to it.

it will have bumper top bumper warranty covering everything for "usually" 36k miles or 3 years then you have like 100k mile warranty on drivetrain stuff but they will tell you all that when you go look. the initial bumper to bumper warranty on everything sometimes changes the years and miles (it used to be 6 years or 60k miles) but the drive trains are always the 100k miles. on my 98 truck they replaced the leather steering wheel for free after 3 years because part of the finish peeled (I didn't tell them it was because I had sticky glue on my hand and that s why it peeled lol.

and about the note, its $317 a month for 5 years (60 months) and $273 for 6 years (72 months) for a brand new black 4 door corolla http://www.raybrandttoyota.com/new/Toyota/2015-Toyota-Corolla-fc6ed6260a0a00e00b1f78b7106f90a1.htm

Okay, but is the loan secured on unsecured? Is there a deposit or down payment attached? Is there a balloon payment if the interest rate posted changes? What amount are you approved for at 3.9%?

Rarely will a bank or credit union loan out more than $5K unsecured, which means they will turn this into a vehicle loan. A vehicle loan will have the interest rate depend on what you buy and from whom. If they do keep the low rate they will want some cash against the loan to protect themselves in case you get burned on the used car purchase. Also, a lot of lucrative posted rates have funny rules attached that could trigger extra payments, so read the fine print.

Toyota does offer 2.9% on some used models but I believe it's only on a minimal value of something like $20k. Also it's attached to a certain amount of term. I think it's 3 or 4 years IIRC.

Everything except damage you cause, which your insurance will cover. Radio goes bad, you get a new one. Weird noise in the back? You can keep taking it to the Toyota dealer you like until it sounds right. You'll also get protected under lemon law. So let's say the engine goes bad twice. You'll have the option of pursuing a case to get your money and legal fees back 100 percent.

I've taken car loans before, and never had any issues like the items you mentioned. Have things changed in recent years? In the past, it was always pretty simple - I agreed to a length of time to repay an agreed upon amount of money at a particular interest rate. Then I made the payments and everything was pretty straightforward.
