I just searched on Hyundaiusa.com for the offers in your area. Right now you can get a new Hyundai Elantra, with a ton of options, for $2,500 off due to incentives. They are also offering 0% for 66 months. So a new Elantra, after delivery, might run you $18K with all the options you want (and I think that's too much, you could haggle better, but for examples sake). That's only $250/month!

Hyundai is 5 years 100,000 miles on everything, 7 years unlimited miles on the powertrain.

Toyota is 3 years 60,000 on everything, 5 years 100,000 on the powertrain I believe.

Oh it is that simple. You mentioned an advertised open loan rate though, and that's different than a used car loan.

Except I don't want to pay on a commuter car every month for the next 7 years. 5 years is already long enough!

BTW I was wrong... Hyundai is now a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty on the engine, transmission, and drive line. So your car mechanically, if you only do 10,000 miles a year, is protected for 10 years...

I know. The thing is though most people don't drive Honda and Toyota for that reason. I'm not saying don't spend the extra and go with something from those two, but there are other options out there that fit what you want exactly with tons of reliability built in.

BTW Hyundai's only been here for 10 years. They pretty much have the same reputation Toyota did after being here for ten years. Just saying.

I just priced them and they are about $20 more a month then the corolla is for the same terms

    Nope.

Actually I have no ties to Hyundai. I have friends that work for Toyota dealers in Calgary. My wifes best friends dad owns the Subaru dealer here. My wifes parents are best friends with the people who own the local Mazda dealership. One of my customers owns shares in a few Ford dealerships. Most of my family back in Eastern Canada works for or has worked for GM or GM dealers. One of my other customers has family that owns the local Dodge dealer.

Hyundai, Nissan, and Mitsubishi are about the only companies I have no ties with lol.

OK, did the math on the fuel difference between a 2012 Civic and a 1st gen Taco going 500 miles per month, or 6K per year in commute miles. Difference is $528 per year, based on that fuel economy website, which is $44/mth.

Assuming the truck was in good condition and was an '03 or '04 with reasonably low miles, what other hidden costs can you guys think of that we'd face compared to a Civic type car?

Wonder what insurance diff. would be. I know parts would certainly cost more. Repairs in general would, I suppose? Although a newer car will have more electrical garbage to break and need troubleshooting than an older Taco.......

don't think about it that way, electrical issues are very rare now days as things are built much better today then they used to, but... if you buy a used one and find they have been messing with wires and now it has electrical issues, run!

I really want another Taco. This sucks. I am so afraid of ever being Taco-less again for any length of time!! And it would be really cool for both of us to get to drive the vehicle we love, not just one of us while the other drives some practical boring POS. Ya know? When you look at just the fuel diff, $40 bucks a month seems worthwhile to allow us to both drive what we love. But I know there's more to it than just the gas......that's where it gets foggy......

I would say, gas mileage aside, don't you feel safer driving the Taco over the economy car?
At least with a 2nd Taco, if it was a similar year, you'd only need extra parts to fix 1 vehicle...:notsure:
