The safety thing is so true. Sitting up higher when driving in the glare of headlights and constant pouring rain makes a HUGE difference in the safety factor. Sure, you can do it in a tiny car, but way more tense moments than in a Taco. Like when semi's pass you. That's always fun. :D Tense moments are bad for your health. So we are actually saving in health care costs by purchasing the truck instead of the tiny car. :D

actually, i don't feel any safer in a taco over a small modern car...cabin integrity beats mass and a much lower roll hazard.

It would be interesting to see the safety ratings on a 1st gen Taco compared to the safety ratings on a '12 Civic or Corolla.

it would be a lie because they use crash test ratings specifically designed to make small trucks fail. that's one of the reasons they are making trucks so big now days, to meet the unrealistic side front corner collision tests they use

Oh wow, I had no idea about any of that! So that site, US New and World Reports, that ranks used cars - they list a safety score for each vehicle, from 1- 10 - would that be the same results as the crash test results?

The Civic would win in every collision. A lot of work has gone into safety in 12 years.

The 1st gen Tacoma is not a safe vehicle by todays standards :crapstorm:

Really? How would it measure up I wonder? Pretty sure that site only goes back 10 yrs, just like Consumer Reports.

Kreaker is right though, the front high offset crash test is totally unrealistic. Ford ran the test with actual vehicles, not walls, up in Sweden at the Volvo crash testing facility and found that vehicles tend to bounce and twist off each other on high offset crash, unlike a collision with a wall with the car on a track that doesn't allow the vehicle to twist away from the collision.

Yes but modern technology, heck even the steels and alloys now used, have improved by leaps and bounds over the last 20 years. Ever since the Explorer issues with rollovers the focus on collisions in larger vehicles has also caused a revolution in truck safety. TBH anything designed in the 90's truckwise didn't have much thought give to safety, crumple zones in the frame, etc. It was only in the early 2000's that companies began paying attention to those things, when 1/2 tons became popular family vehicles, which is why the second generation is much safer in that respect. I'm sure the 3rd gen will be even safer.

I'm in no way pissed :D.

I was just sayin. TBH have you considered a 2015 AC 4WD SR I4 Tacoma? I think they can be had around $23K-$24K. That would only be 350 a month for a brand new Tacoma....

OK, everyone vote. If you had $15K to spend on a vehicle, which would you choose?

    A) A 1st gen Taco with Xtra Cab, 4wd, 100K miles.

    B) A 2012 Civic or Corolla 4 door sedan with ~60K miles.

You would use the vehicle for a 25 mile commute each day. Your other vehicle is a 98 Taco that you love dearly and know you will be very sad to let go of someday, and you know you will want to get another ASAP when you have to. In addition to commuting, you'd use it for weekend stuff and could rotate between the two trucks for stuff you go do on weekends, from off roading to long drives to errands. You could use the Civic for things like errands on weekends, but it would be too small and uncomfortable to take on long drives and obviously would not go off roading.

Everybody pick one!! :D Obviously you all know what I want but I am sincerely curious what you all would do. :)
