    B) 2012 Civic, just because the odds are it will be more reliable and you already have another truck.

Honestly I don't like either option. 10 year old trucks, even Tacomas, can have there issues (as you well know now) and that Civic is literally just off warranty so you never know if someone ditched it for exactly that reason. Both vehicles are over priced. I mean, that Tacoma is going to be 14K and might blow the engine tomorrow and you'd have no recourse. That Civic has lost some value, but not enough to justify not buying new IMHO with everything from warranty to potential abuse factored in.

My wife and I went through this similar process trying to make a 4Runner SUV, another Tacoma, or a GM Colorado/Canyon fit our needs because it was better on gas, could fit more kids, and would be a great buy financially compared to a half ton and you know what we ended up buying. A half ton Ford F150 because it was what we really needed. I think you may be skipping over what you really need and trying to make something else fit.

BTW my wife didn't want an F150 and even when we signed for it she was still on the fence. Within two weeks she's hooked and has commented that the F150 really was the best choice.

I know, it's hard to make decisions between what you want and what you need when it comes to the big stuff. And we've just coasted along for SOOOOOOOOOO long with none of those kinds of decisions - the Civic and Taco just kept going with no payments, no real issues, for so many years. Suddenly we got this harsh wake up call with both vehicles kinda all at once, and it's tough to figure it all out. I will be so happy when this decision is behind us!! :D

We just do butt dyno comparisions. She claims her standard cab is faster, I claim the xcab,v6 is faster. We have never lined them up and floored the skinny pedal. ( I don't want to embarrass her, I kinda like "together time").

All I can say is there is a reason some people are financially sound. Almost none of them put money into a car payment. They bought used or ran their car for 15 years.

Cheapest, or no payment as long as possible allows savings to take place.

I buy and fix what someone else has written off and drive them till the wheels fall off. I know I'm the exception to the rule, but I think back to my folks days. No cell phones and we still took cross country trips.

Repairs, yes are a hassle, but still beat the fuck out of a car payment.

I don't really have a dog in this hunt. The wife and I are the oddities that wreck the bell shaped curve.

The 4RNR would be great for keeping the hounds cool. Gotta take care of the K9's.

So if you have a car payment you aren't financially sound? That doesn't make sense. I get the Rich Dad Poor Dad argument, and getting by with less always costs less, but I enjoy having a vehicle from start to finish and there is value in that. I read lots about those misers who spend there whole life in a shit box home with a 15 year old car that die with millions in the bank. That's no fun. The trick is to live within your means where you can still pack away a few hundred a month for retirement. If you start early enough, you will finish with more than enough with only a small percentage of your income going into retirement planning. Too many people wait for their mortgage to clear up and then dump money into the retirement accounts after 50, which has too little time to build up into something great.

I think it's fine to buy a new car. What gets people in trouble is trading into a negative equity situation every few years or, worse, leasing on long term leases. Then you never get ahead or have a period of no payments.

I intend to run this Tacoma into the ground. Then I'll buy a new one and do it all over again.

Same here :notsure:. Except for the shit box house part. I'd like to say modest instead. 2600 square feet livable, 1300 square foot bungalow that's going to be fully renovated by my own hands in the next 5 years.

I've only been saving for a few years and I already have a sizable account. Actually I should be able to retire at roughly 55, but I'll probably keep working on my own terms because retirement sounds boring. BTW 55 is a very fluid number. In all likelihood I could go semi-retired earlier but when I quit busting my ass I want to make sure I have more than enough for myself and something to help out my kids. I'll be helping with their college but exactly like my parents did, I paid everything back.

It also helps that I love my job and I make a very good salary.

I agree, I don't, nor do I have to, "play catch up". I have saved my ass off for the last 20 years. Nor have I really suffered and missed much. I have missed some stuff, but I know I'm going to be secure to the end.

A car payment is something I don't miss. Being a blue color worker, I think I did pretty good.

What I would have paid for a new vehicle, is now sitting in my 40k or Roth.

I'm not going to respond further along this line, I know I don't have enough financial knowledge to debate. I'm happy.

Think so. Hope so. He might work on it tonight, but in all likelihood it will be tomorrow evening.

We were just talking about the Honda CRVs. They get 22mpg, compared to 16 in a Taco, or 32 in a Civic (according to that fuel economy site). A CRV would be more fun/versatile than a Civic or Corolla, but do better on fuel than a Taco. They got stellar perfect ratings on Consumer Reports every year. I found one at an asking price of $12,500, with 100K. It's a 2005. They have 4wd/AWD. Looks like it's been serviced on schedule all those years at a local Honda dealer, the same dealer with each of the two owners. Nothing shady in the Carfax. Whaddya guys think?
