Last minute oil filter wrench advice.

Bought a case of 90915-20004 and a Fumoto valve and will be changing oil this weekend. What is the least painful method of removing the oil filter for the first time (without jamming a screwdriver through it)? I've done a search and narrowed it down to end cap filter wrench with some sand paper or the 3-jaw filter wrench. I'm on the fence.

 

I could not find my filter wrench the last time I did the oil change and used a large pair of pliers to get it off,pulled the little plug from the aluminum filter surround and used a plastic drink bottle that had the top cut off to catch the oil from the used filter as I unscrewed it. the first 5k oil change on my truck happened at the dealer so they got off the - from the factory - filter, I've read the originals are a real pain to get off because their so tight

 

i picked up an end cap wrench from napa, works well

 

You use the dealer filters? What size wrench did you get?

 

if you buy the steel wrench, it fits 3 sizes. i'll go take a look right now, i have it in the garage.

i took a filter in with me just to make sure it fit

well i like to use the k and n filters with the one inch nut on the bottom it makes it super easy to take off

 

End/filter wrench is what I use, backup is one of those strap wrenches but doesnt work so well of the filter is oily.
I find it useful to loosen the filter until it can be turned by hand , but not leaking, before I actually drain the oil that way oil doesnt migrate to the filters outside and the hard part is over.

 

Filter wrenches seem like a waste to me. I have bought a few in the past and they only get used once...to get the first filter off.
I only tighten the filter hand tight so the next change I never needed the wrench.
Try pliers or if it's clean and you can get a good grip, muscle it off. You may not need to buy one afterall.

 

Mostly true, then someone wants to borrow it, or one of the filters gets stuborn, costs less than a meal at Muck Darn-old's

 

My hand is my wrench. Oil filter pliers wrk well if needed

If you have the room to use it, (which you should) this is the last and only oil filter take off tool you will ever have to use. You can pick them up at all or most auto part stores.

EDIT: Yep you'll have the room, I have used this tool on my 2nd generation like your truck.

 

Exactly. I also use Purolator PureOne filters that have the textured paint. Just did an oil change yesterday, actually, and the POS filter wrench stayed on the workbench.

 

It sucks the first time because you never know how it was installed. I never use one either, as I don't over tighten them to begin with. But that being said,

First off I have too many different vehicles and they don't adjust. The dealer used one of these on the factory filter (just to loosen it for me, and it would just jump/spin after massive muscle trying to get it off.

And if it slips, put a piece of sandpaper grit side to the filter and it'll twist the base off the body before it slips.
