To start I live on an island that is a 7 hour ferry ride plus another 1.5hr drive to the nearest dealership, cost's about $400 to get there. So anyways a couple of weeks ago I brought my truck to this dealership to get my passerger cv joint replaced, great the did it under warranty, but had to take off my wheelspacers from each wheel, ok, fine they fix the cv joint. I drive to Prince George (6hr drive) the same day and notice the a bit of a wobble in the steering, don't pay much attention to it and decide to put my wheelspacers back on during my stay in PG. I stay there a few days and then head for home. I get back to the town where the dealership is and end up have to get a wheel alignment through insurance (whole other story). The tire shop puts my truck on the lift and right away they notice that the drivers side outer tie-rod is shot! Now this is a day before I have to catch the ferry home and I'm wondering why the didn't Toyota notice that the tie-rod was shot? So I figure fuckit I'll just take the truck home and get a local shop to fix it under warranty for Toyota. I get home, try to arrange that to happen and Toyota says " Sorry we have to do the warranty work ourselves, no one else no exceptions." Bullshit is what I say, but it doesn't fix the tie-rod end, so I'm paying myself I guess, cheaper than a ferry ride!! sorry for the length.

Yeah sorry to hear about your situation or situations with the dealer, I think sometimes when they do work on our trucks they don't bother to look for anything else wrong with it. They may not have the time, don't care, don't want to have to deal with it.

I would think that since they are working in that area of the truck, they would see something or a quick look/check. But I guess not.
As far as the distance that does suck, but that is not the dealerships fault, and I think I would agree with them when they do the work. Because they are paying for it.

But anyways I hope everything works out for you, and I can certainly understand what you are going through, since I had to deal with it myself too.

The whole warranty thing seems strange. I have a Suzuki SX4 work car and get warranty work done at a local garage all the time. The nearest Suzuki dealership is roughly 700km's from me. The garage just bills Suzuki after the work is finished. That sucks man!

Warranty work is always done by the "certified Toyota" dealerships. Again, its the lawyers and litigation. Someone sued someone and then someone said "fuggit". So we the people suffer. Lawyers, guns and money....

I would assume the Great White North since he mentioned driving to Prince George.

Off topic really quick. Is it a requirement for all Canadians to watch "Strange Brew"?

You didn't have to go all Warren Zevon on the poor fella.

I have never heard of it either, nut then again, my life doesn't revolve around the boob tube.....
In response to the OP, I see no reason why a non Toyota dealer could not do the repai, and you get re-imbursed.

I live on the farthest west coast of British Columbia on the Queen Charlotte Islands (the natives call it "Haida Gwaii"). It is pretty isolated but it has it's perk along with its pains in the ass!

At the dealership I bought my truck at it's a toyota/chrysler lot and in a town on island here they do the warranty work for chrysler all of the time. They're probably just screwing me around, or maybe I wasn't persistent enough. Has anyone else heard of an outer tie-rod end crapping out before 60,000km on an '08?
