Hit, and killed a deer last winter with no damage. I was going around 40mph. A couple winters back I got rear ended by a Ford Taurus. The car's hood went under my bumper, lifted my rear left side up enough that my exhaust punched through her radiator. Not a scratch on my truck, just red paint from the hood. Plate is a good investment to save from low speed impacts that would otherwise crumple the stock bumpers. High speed stuff... More luck involved.

My only impact is steel replacement on 3/4 ton diesel vs buck opening weekend of deer season. Not how i wanted to take out a buck. Turned him inside out. Weird thing no blood. Just a bag of meaty stuff we drug to the side of the road. No damage to replacement bumper. I will be adding a bumpe to my taco with out a doubt. And it aint for looks

I highly doubt any R&D went into the Pontiac (there I said it again) Fiero which was basically a fiberglass coffin. I'll stick to my original argument that vehicles are designed to sell.

I would like to hear the story. Because there is also a 4 runner in the background with a nicely dented hood. So now we got a 4 way head on collision.

Lemme guess, road was slick and someone slid across an intersection into a row of stopped traffic?

I can help with Fiero information.
The body was not fiberglass, only the a-pillar and roof covering.
There are actually two firewalls, one in front and one in the back of the cabin.
You can actually remove all of the body panels and drive the car around without flexing the uni-body, which is why it was the foundation for a lot of kit cars.
I've seen a picture of one that a trailer tandem rolled over, suspension crushed, and front windshield shattered, but no injury to the driver.
I don't know where you got the bad information about a fiberglass coffin, you may want to write that source off the list.
It's demise was two-fold, first the A/C line was prone to rupture, spewing R-12 refrigerant onto a hot exhaust manifold, pretty slow on the recall too.
Primary competition was the Firebird, Camaro, and Corvette, and the sales bit GM in the ass.
The car was a financial success by the end of the second year of production, nearly a record.

So actually what happened was I was heading east bound in icy conditions and saw the 4Runner heading west bound when he hit ice and smashed the wall behind it. I pulled over into the center turning lane to check on him when the flat bed (heading westbound) was on his phone texting and didn't see traffic slowing down decided to slam on the brakes and veer into the center lane. He couldn't slow down or stop because of the ice. He hit me going between 35 and 45 nearly head on (while I was at a complete stop) then bounced off me and hit the Chevy in the next lane to me. Both the Chevy, flatbed and 4 runner were totaled. I drove home.

Okay sorry, "enduroflex" body. I still would rather have a plate bumper for protection, just saying.

    Woo!!! Go Tacos!

Although, just out of curiosity, did you get any blame in that accident because you pulled off onto the center turn lane to assist the other guy?

    Agreed.

Tough to argue with 320lbs of bumper and winch.

Nope not my fault at all. The other guy got a ticket for wreckless driving and texting and driving. I stopped bc the cares in the westbound lanes continued to pass the wrecked 4 runner and no one attempted to stop and check on him.

    Holy crap you guys.
These bumpers are incredibly expensive. You can repair a lot of damage to a truck for the cost of one of these lol.

Oh heck no. Have you called your local Toyota parts department? Got an estimate to just repaint the bumper?

Not that I noticed. No where near the impact of going to a heavier tire than stock.

Had a few football buddies from high school aboard a few months ago, roughly a half ton of people in the cab, mileage was maybe 1 mpg lower?

You will want stronger coil springs depending how much gravity you add.

Online I can get a new bumper for like $200 bucks. Take it to a shop to get painted for maybe $200 more to be liberal.

It don't cost no $1,200 like the ones I was seeing.

Add in the possibility of fenders breaking and grille. Repainting all that is gonna get close. So if you go off-road its better to have a steel bumper
