I was lurking at the dealership and the lead sales rep said that Toyota has actually been testing a cvt in a Tacoma on their proving grounds and its held up better than anticipated. No searching for gears, cooled temps, tows without any lurching, and gets up to speed smoothly. This was still mated to the 4.0, so who knows if its ever gunna come to our table.

    Opinions?

I'm new to cvt grand deals but he seemed very hopeful

My wife's Prius has a CVT. Meh. I'm indifferent.

    Show me mileage numbers.

Towing and CVT's don't mix just yet. I am just stoked they are offering a manual. Naturally automakers experiment with things that may never see the light of day though.

He said they did extensive off-road testing and it was a smooth controlled climb and decent, maybe she to the no gears thing?

Maybe they will make a manual CVT where the shifter is just a lever you move up and down.

That I'm not buying one yet but this dude has been at this dealership for over ten yrs, and his father does R&D for yoter.

He was also the one who came clean about the pro suspension before it was released..... He was right on the money with that, so why would he just make up a false story?

I am sure Toyota tests all kinds of stuff. Most of which will never see production. Testing just means they are testing something. That is it. I am sure somewhere at sometime Toyota threw a diesel in the gen 2 Tacoma to test but as we know, no diesel coming.

True, maybe I'll ask some techs since they will have to have proper training yes?

My previous subaru had a CVT in it, it was one of the main reason I switched vehicles. Other then finally being able to afford a taco :) <3.

One can never have too many light bars.
BMW has been testing v6's for years. So naturally whenever a V6 BMW is spotted people lose their shit. They are just testing to see if it can accomplish the job better than the Inline 6. Which it can't. Bottom line is there's a huge difference from testing and what actually goes into the production models. Don't hold your breath for a CVT Truck.

Ahh yes. The good old rubber band transmission. I wouldn't touch one of those if equipped on a Tacoma nor any other vehicle at that with a 10 foot pole.

My buddy has the '15 WRX with the CVT. I drove it. Doesn't compare to my base Impreza CVT. It's pretty awesome. I know the die-hard MT drivers won't believe that, but the good reviews on it are accurate.
