When I was in college I was driving a 1988 Mazda B2200 5 spd. One day at school I forgot to set the parking brake and unknowingly knocked it out of gear with my backpack. Later that morning it rolled into a ditch and caused $700.00 damage to my truck. I've always set my parking brake ever since. Live and learn.

I rarely set my parking brake in anything I have ever driven.

On flat ground or a slight incline. On a steep hill I will set it. Standard or Automatic. I don't believe since having my Tacoma I have ever set the emergency brake.

My Old Ranger was a 5 speed, and I always put it in reverse and left it. Never had it run away.

People keep mentioning warped rotors and I'm wondering how the hell putting on your parking brake (rear drum) is gonna warp the front rotors haha.

I feel that if the person so choses to not use the vehicle provided safety feature we were all taught to use when parking then they should be
Thats because the original person who mentioned it assumed we were driving cars and not our trucks.. LOL

You know when I come to TACOMAworld.com, I always look for information for my Veyron and I always leave disappointed. I would rate tacomaworld.com 1 out of 5 stars for Veyron information.

Wow, a whole bunch of idiot comments in this thread. Just please ensure your vehicle does not roll out of it's parking spot and hit my vehicle and we are all good. Don't give a shit if it's with the e-brake or park or 1st gear, just make sure it don't freakin' move.

Also people must note, that on our rear drum brakes, setting the parking brake ADJUSTS the shoes themselves as they wear, If you never use your parking brake and are wondering why you have to push the pedal a LOOONG way before brakes engage, this is why.

I live on an upward hill, so I park, turn my tires to the right, engage the parking brake, and chock the rear tires. Gotta love mining safety.

Each time I see a driver going full retard with tail gating, weaving in and out of lanes speeding and making even me who drives aggressive go WTF!!!!

It's a damn woman!!!!!!!!!! usually in the 20s'30's age range sometimes older too, they drive with 0 regard for anything... scares the shit out of me.

I almost never see a guy drive like this. its a 9/10 ratio for sure.

Is your truck pointing downhill? If not you are turning your wheels the wrong way. I can't tell from your post but turning the wheels is a good add to this thread as well as being the law.

Hey everybody, I know I said I wasn't gonna post in here again, but I changed my mind.. Tonight, When I parked my truck in the driveway (which is on a hill) I didn't use my parking/e brake. Just thought I'd share... Also I have an automatic transmission, hope the prawl thingy doodle doesn't snap off and my truck roll into the mailbox and across the street into the neighbors outdoor fighting gerbil cage and kennel. Those things are high dollar.

Aren't all hills upward? If it was downward wouldn't it be a ditch?

Anyways, your tires are the wrong way. You want your truck to roll into the curb, not the street.

I use it for many reasons, number one being that it is one of my favorite things about the first gen and earlier toyota trucks. That handle is just too rad!

I've had two instances with a parking brake that were concerning.
1st 1988 K1500 4.3L v6 5spd 4x4, 178,000 miles. This truck the parking shoes would never adjust correctly thus no parking brake. If I was on any kind of grade in gear my truck would slowly roll in the direction that was lowest. I applied what I learned in drivers ed and turned the wheel into the curb down the hill, and never had an indecent or accident.

2nd 2007 Toyota Tundra Double Cab 8' bed 5.7L v8 Auto. 4x4 65,000 miles. This truck fully operational and adjusted parking brake. When on grade with parking break on and truck in Neutral, the truck would roll right through the parking brake (I think toyota missed the weight ratio on calculating the size or pressure of parking brake required.)

My 2014 Tacoma I use my parking brake every time I don't want to have my truck sitting on the parking pin in the transmission. This parking brake actually holds the truck in place! I still follow best practices of turning the wheel to the curb when appropriate. Nothing more satisfying as belt and suspenders.

^ parking brakes only have to hold the vehicle (automatic transmission) stopped
when in D and engine is 1000rpm. if they can do that, parking brakes are set correctly.

they should be way better than that though, but this is the minimum
