I'm just about to buy a 2015 and have gone back and forth between getting a sport or an off road. When I test drove an off road I noticed the brakes were very touchy at least compared to the sport. Is there something different or maybe there was something wrong with the off road that I drove.

There's a brake booster on the TRD Off-Road. It also makes a sucking/squishing sound when you first depress the pedal. The noise is annoying for the first 5k miles...but you get used to it.

The booster is what makes ATRAC work. The more powerful brakes (and larger discs) allow ATRAC to control front-wheel spin in those nasty situations. Combined with a locked rear-end, it's supposed to be quite effective.

I'm looking forward to testing mine soon, and these features are the exact reason I chose the Off-Road over the Sport

The squish sound seems to annoy my passengers more than I.

My passengers haven't said anything...maybe they're thinking "I don't wanna crush this his 'new truck' excitement."

Well thats good to know its normal, the difference was night and day but I'm still leaning toward getting a sport because I honestly have no use for all the off road 4wd gadgets and like the look of the sport better. Feel free to chime in and attempt to change my mind because I'm on the fence with this one. I do like the look of the hood FAKE hood scoop and painted trim and this truck will never go four wheeling other than pulling a fishing boat out of a lake so that's why I'm leaning towards the sport. Like I said feel free to post something to try to persuade me into getting an off road.

I can't argue the painted trim is a nice touch. I'm actually slowly upgrading my trim to paint. I just ordered painted door handles last week.

If you don't feel like the enhanced off-road (or emergency) capability is required for your lifestyle, then I won't try and change your mind. At least you're being honest about it. That's a lot different then the guys who try and off-road regularly with the Sport.

You can wheel just fine with a Sport. Just doesn't have a locker, keep that in mind and they go great off road.

turd or brakes are super touchy by default

that and atrac and a locker, and somewhat better shocks to handle
a bit more heat from washboard dirt roads. oh yeah bigger tire volume
to handle punching rocks better (trd OR 16 inch rim vs sport 17 inch rim)

TRD Sport and TRD off road come with the same exact suspension and rotors... in fact like stated all 6 luggers come with the same sized rotors.

only the 09+ TRD off road comes with the electric boosted master cylinder that also has a self contained ABS unit. This is different than any other model that has a vacuum boosted master and separate abs unit.

The brakes on the TRD OR are more touchy because line pressures are about 2x as much as the vacuum boosted setup on any other model.

I got my 2015 DCSB TRD OR last week and was wondering about the noise when I pressed the brake down. lol.

Now I need to figure out lift options.

Except for the springs, right? OR has progressive and Sport has linear.

    ^ yup on both accounts.

I meant as far as the actual shocks go, TRD OR and Sport have the same shocks.

Thanks for all the replies, you guys really know your Tacoma's. Today I ended up buying a black double cab short box off road and am glad I did. One thing I was wondering about today was this, the rims on the sport is 17 inch and on the off road their 16 inch but is the overall diameter of the wheels/tires the same between the two. It doesn't matter at this point but I was just curious.

very slight difference in sidewall flex, 16's take a rock pounding slightly better given the same model tire

yeah likely negligible for most peeps

Different sway bars? Or does one have it and the other doesn't?
