Hey TW! Happy Friday!! What's everyone's plans for the weekend?

Civic is working (at the moment ), and we are still deciding what we want to do. In the meantime, I'm trying a new approach - doing more throughout the day than just complaining :pout: to you guys about my vehicle problems! :D But don't worry @keakar , I'm sure this new approach will never last

Question - I assume talking about politics on TW is probably a bad idea, or maybe not even :censored: allowed? Could cause too much of this :argue: :duel:and not enough of this  probably, huh? Would certainly keep it lively  I'll bet :D

Talking about politics seems to fly okay in the Canada forum, but that's probably because our parties aren't so religiously driven or polarized :D.

Yep, that's certainly one very accurate way of describing our parties. Or at least one of them. :D

Why do I feel like I'm doing this :poking: by even bringing up this topic? Thinking maybe I don't want to go there. I like my TW buddies and don't want to take the chance on the thread turning into this:rant::rant:. Nevermind. :D I have absolutely no opinion on any of that stuff. :D Ignorance is bliss. :D

So, who's up for some food/beverage talk? Anybody have some ideas for frozen strawberry drinks? How about a creative burger recipe? Eric's boss has a cattle ranch, so we receive 50 lbs of super yummy grass fed beef every year. Always a good time trying to cram it all in the freezer, usually on a moment's notice, so it almost always winds up arriving the day after I go to Costco and stock up . Anyway, sick of tacos, and getting sick of regular old cheeseburgers. Not really a fan of meatloaf, and meatballs are a PITA to make. Ideas? Crazy burger ideas?

Lasagna and Enchilada's are easy to make, freeze, and then cook when needed. Our family gets some beef from charity sales every once in a while (we buy the beef for charity just to clarify lol.) Most of it that is ground beef we use for meatballs, lasagna, and enchilada's.

how about a sauce piquante? if you don't have smoked sausage, you can use pork, or just double the beef, or whatever meat you have. the key is just to equal the same amount of meat (3 lbs)

    Karl's Sauce Piquante

1-1 1/2 lbs of beef (stew meat) cut into 3/4" bite sized bits
1-1 1/2 lbs Veron smoked sausage (sliced and halved)
2 or 3 large yellow onions (chopped fine)
2 or 3 heaping tablespoons minced garlic (2-3 regular cloves)
    4 cups water
1 can beef gravy (skip this for seafood)
2 large (15oz) can diced or chopped tomatoes (plus liquids)
1 small (6-8oz) can tomato sauce
1 or 2 large (15oz) can chopped mushroom pieces (without liquids)
2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (skip for seafood) (soy sauce for poultry)
    3 heaping tablespoons parsley
1 teaspoon each (oregano, thyme, rosemary)
    2 teaspoons salt
    1/2 cup all purpose flour
    1/4 cup veggie oil

NOTE 1 - For poultry skip step 1 and pre-cook, de-bone and cut into bite sized 3/4" chunks and instead of using the beef gravy and worcestershire sauce, just use a can of turkey gravy or cream of chicken soup, whichever matches the meat best and use soy sauce instead of worcestershire sauce .

NOTE 2 - For Seafood skip step 1 and move on to step 2 but don't add the beef gravy or worcestershire sauce. Seafood meat only goes in when finished and then simmer for another 5 minutes.

    Directions:
    1. In a large, heavy pot like a 5 quart Dutch oven, add 4 cups of water to pot and bake the beef or pork roast in a pre-heated oven @ 350 degrees for 1 hour then remove the meat and let cool before cutting it up. (leave liquids in the pot)
    2. Place the pot on stove at medium heat and add in the onions, garlic, parsley, and all seasonings and cook until onions turn clear while you make a roux with the flour and oil in a separate pan and then add it and all remaining ingredients except for the meat and simmer for 15 minutes.
    3. now add the meat and smoked sausage and bake in a pre-heated oven @ 350 degrees for 1 hour more or until all meat is tender and your done.

Nice pics of the pets. I'll have to dig up some of my cats. We are such soft touches. People can't take care of them and we end up with the things. Oh, well.

I'm done goofing off. I'm going back to work tonight. Oh, joy. I'll be stuck in front of a computer for 12, solid hours playing catch up.:help:

Uh oh. We're watching some you tube videos and we're pretty sure that "rattling" noise we hear in the Civ when going uphill/accelerating is not the cat like the tech said, but knocking/pinging/predetonation.

Don't know exactly what that means other than it's bad engine news. Really? Again? What the hell is in the gas around here? WHY????????????????????????????????????

Eric's looking at the spark plugs as a 1st step now, before bothering with that replacement seal for the oil leak. It's weird though, because we found folks with this noise saying they drove the car for 10 years like that!! I don't understand how that's possible, or else I don't understand what knock/ping/predetonation actually means.

This person's video is what the "rattle" sounds like. If you go to ~50 seconds, you can really hear it. Do you guys think this noise is pinging/detonation? Some people are saying use higher octane fuel, think there's any truth to that helping a problem like this?

If it's pinging primium should reduce or eliminate the issue. It could be a problem with the knock sensor if the Honda has one.

Now my Labrador. Too bad she's still too hyper to be a trail dog.

I don't hear the noise in the video and I have no idea if pinging is what you're experiencing or not but...
preventing pinging is precisely what higher octane gas is for and in fact, all it's for. there's nothing "premium" about premium gas. It simply burns slightly slower and is more resistant to combusting due to compression before the spark.

Just found a segment in this article about what to do when you have detonation/pre-ignition. 1st item was higher octane, which it sounds like we should do, but item #10 caught my attention too, because I think this (carbon deposits) could be specifically what our prob is (see part I underlined - sounds like our Civ!).

Anyone ever use that Seafoam crap, or similar products? Or we talked about throwing in some fuel injection cleaner, as we need to fill up soon anyway, but then we started talking..............

We are now wondering if suddenly using the fuel injection cleaner for a while on each vehicle, then stopping use of them is what caused both of our engines to die. Hard to remember exactly when this noise started, but seems to coincide with roughly the time that we stopped using that stuff.

EDIT: I realize both were high in miles anyway so perhaps it's just a coincidence, but that would be a pretty serious coincidence, with the timing of each problem...

    10. Remove carbon deposits. An accumulation of carbon deposits in the combustion chamber and on the top of the pistons can increase compression to the point where detonation becomes a problem. Carbon deposits are a common cause of detonation in high-mileage engines, and can be especially thick if the engine consumes oil because of worn valve guides and seals, worn or broken piston rings and/or cylinder wear. Infrequent driving and not changing the oil often enough can also accelerate the buildup of deposits. In addition to increasing compression, carbon deposits also have an insulating effect that slows the normal transfer of heat away from the combustion chamber into the head. A thick layer of deposits can therefore raise combustion temperatures and contribute to "preignition" as well as detonation. Carbon deposits can often be removed from an engine that's still in service by using a chemical "top cleaner." This type of product is poured into an idling engine through the carburetor or throttle body. The engine is then shut off so the solvent can soak into and loosen the deposits. When the engine is restarted the deposits are blown out of the combustion chamber. If chemical cleaning fails to remove the deposits, it may be necessary to pull the cylinder head and scrape the deposits off with a wire brush or scraper (be careful not to scratch the face of the cylinder head or engine deck!).
