Many years ago I had a red 1978 F250 v8 single cab long box.
    That guy could carry anything.
Now I'm happy as can be with my DCLB and one of these if needed.

Happy with DCSB. I needed double cab, 4x4, OR model truck, only came in SB, so my decision was made for me. In my opinion, you'll adapt if you have SB. I only haul camp gear. I can tell you that I have filled every cubic foot of space before, and it will hold a lot back there. Obviously, not the same as hauling home supply materials the OP has described.

Same as Crom, I haul a lot of camping gear most of the year. Just stary organized and its east to fit it all. I have hauled the occasional load to help friends move ect never had an issue or case where I wised I had the long bed. Ive hauled drywall for my pops before too, not really any different that if you had the extra foot imo. 75% of the time tho, my bed is empty.

If the long bed feels small for what your doing with it then you may not like the short bed but if you haven't had an issue with needing more space, you may be able to get away with the SB!

I had a short bed, upgraded to a long bed, and would not go back.

I traded my Dodge 2500 long bed for my 2013 Tacoma.
Gave a lot of thought to the short bed. I went with the long bed. Glad I did.

While I occasionally wish I had the four door when I have multiple passengers, overall the access cab has been fantastic. With my A.R.E. MX shell it's close to perfect. I've also got a Thule weekender roof top box and a Yakima bicycle rack when needed. Perhaps if I do things again I'd consider a 4 door with roof racks and just go with a roof top tent instead of using the long bed.

There are certain luxuries with getting older....(Not many mind you) One is, you DO in fact get "wiser" (just not always in the areas where you NEED to get wiser.) . You make mistakes along the way, and if you aren't a complete idiot, you can actually LEARN from your mistakes. That said, I've had a drivers license for 42 years now. In that time, I've owned a total of 17 different 4wds (+28 car, 15 motorcycles, 2 boats, and 2 wives....Well....I didn't OWN the wives, although a case can be made that they owned ME)

At any rate, I've had long beds, short beds, compact trucks, full size, single cab quad cabs, "access cabs", "SUV's", etc.....When I bought my most recent truck, I knew well ahead of the initial shopping and purchasing EXACTLY what I wanted.

Now then. Anyone with 1/2 a brain (and my first wife often said I had half a brain, so there...) should understand when you buy one type of truck, you have what you have, or, you might wanna own 2 trucks. In my case, that's what I did. I have a DCSB Tacoma (That I LOVE driving) and a long bed regular cab Dodge 3/4-ton pick-em-up " for hauling bigger/heavier stuff. About 98% of my driving is in the Tacoma. I only drive the Mopar when I absolutely HAVE To. (Did I mention I HATE driving full size trucks?) I also have a couple different trailers that'll pull just fine behind the Tacoma. At some point when the Dodge falls over dead, I'll do just fine without the long bed.

And another of those things you learn as you get older, SOMETIMES you have to distinguish the difference between "what you want" and "what you need".

    Anyway.....

I have a DCSB and it hauls almost everything I need it to. For those times I need to haul something bigger or heavier, I have a utility trailer that works perfect for the task. So I get a shorter truck for 80% of my driving, then when hauling a 4-wheeler, dirt bike, sod, building materials whatever, I just use the trailer. Easy peasy!

I do not understand why short beds even exist. I hate them. 5'? Huh? I don't get it. That is sooooo tiny. Is that even a truck?
