Heard of pitting seals into the freezer to get them in easier and putting bearings into somewhere hot to press on easier but the whole thing

 

So the ring gear that I'ma bake in the oven at about 200* will slip right on.

 

Wow I completely missed the ring gear. Haha. I did the same to my 14 bolt in my s10

 

I'm hoping to start tearing it apart tomorrow and maybe getting that thing slapped in there before the hellish heat kicks my back-side.

 

Sure wish they left the rear end alone and kept it like the old hilux rears with the full floating axles. Wouldn't even need to take the tires off to pull the axles and drop the 3rd member. Now I have to disassemble the brakes and everything to get those suckers out. I hate taking apart and reassembling drum brakes...I hate it a lot. This isn't going to be any fun at all.

 

I dislike drums. Very much so. We'll good luck to ya and you wanna do mine when I'm ready lol

 

Haha, thanks. I might entertain helping ya as long as I don't have to mess with the brakes and you plan on doing it in January. To be honest though, I'm not completely confident in my set-up skills. I bought an el cheapo magnetic base for my dial indicator (I have two DIs for my hand-loading operation) from Harbor Freight, but it's only going to work if I can stick it so it's straight up and down. The magnet is pretty weak. Plus you can't really get a shim kit for the 8.4. The shims are like $7 a piece according to ECGS, so if the factory shims don't get you where you need to be you need to figure out what thickness you need and they will sell them to you. The guy did say, though, that 90% of the time, the factory ones would work out fine. Given my luck though, I'm going to be in the 10% that doesn't.

 

I bought a press a dial inch pound wrench so I can do my preload on the bearings plus I have the dial Guage from harbor freight but I have the pliers type

 

@Timbo89 You're better equipped than I am then. I had to have my new carrier bearing pressed on by the machine shop (and the damaged old ones that came on the locker removed). I'm not planning on messing with the pinion gear though so I won't need to set the preload...although I did learn yesterday, that I really need to go to 4.56s. I pulled a 4000 lb load of gravel and the OGT didn't like it at all. You'd have thought I was pulling a D9 Cat with how badly the OGT was struggling. I thought I was going to have to drop it into 2 lo to get it home a couple of times. It was disappointing, especially since my old F250 would have dragged that weight without even noticing it was back there.

 

Sold most of the tools to do a gear set. Needed room in the garage. Your just changing the carrier right? And my wheels and tires toom the wind out of my sails. I need to refer but wanna find one set up already and just put her in

Well, I got it all tore apart and the ring gear is baking in the oven. I did discover something disappointing though. Turns out the OGT has highway gears. They are 3.90s instead of 4.10s like I thought. Explains why she was struggling towing that 4000 lb load of gravel.

Update: the locker is installed in the third member and it's all set up. ECGS was dead on. I had .008" backlash with the outgoing setup and I had .0065 with the locker, which is just slightly over the lower limit. Everything looks good and it's all ready to go back together tomorrow...assuming I can get out of bed or move. The third member was unexpectedly heavy. It knocked my whatcha-call-it in the dirt. Getting old sucks. Can't do anything anymore that doesn't result in a moderate amount of pain.

Well, as of about 1300 today, the OGT is now 100% 4WD! (And I know a certain hill at Croom that's gonna get owned the next time I'm there.)

 

had a lil run in with gandy this evening, gandy won again, still super wet out there, a jeep helped me out, all those jeepers are super nice, it's funny, i was at the derby lane, and anthony (loudass arod) called me, and he had gotten stuck too!!! but i missed his call, and someone else helped him out

 

I didn't get a phone call for this! Friendship is over.
