New Truck burns oil

Is it normal for new truck to burn oil when you first start the engine ? Its 2010 Tacoma TRD Off Road with 633 Miles on it. It only happens when you cold start it and you can virtually smell and see the white smoke comming out of it for a while. Ive been trying to keep the RPM below 3k till I reach 1000mil on the engine.

 

Burning oil like that would not be normal. Also, blue smoke is oil, and white some is water/condensation.

 

I noticed the same thing the day dealer shipped the truck to me and I totally forgot to ask him about that.

Will this go away after I break in the engine (1000+miles) ?

 

Keeping the RPM that low for the first 1000 miles is overkill. The first 50 miles, yes, great idea, and limited full-throttle acceleration from 50 to 100 or 500 miles isn't a bad idea.

But you probably ought to have some hard acceleration in there after 50 miles to get cylinder pressures up.

It's cold in many places around the country right now--are you sure the 'smoke' you're seeing isn't just condensation?

 

I doubt what you are seeing is "smoke". Simple condensation built up in the exhaust that almost every vehicle has and does in cool weather and even in warm climates.

Oil burns blue and is very noticeable to the nose as well.

 

The reason I said smoke bcuz I can clearly smell the oil burning and perhaps it is the condensation. Automatic transmission keeps the RPM really really low while driving like Below 1500 most of the times. I am going to have the transmission in 4th gear while driving till I reach 1000miles on this truck.

Honestly I am still not liking this truck so far. I really miss driving high-rev engine of CIVIC SI.

 

Why are you driving in 4th gear? Auto works just fine. I RARELY ever get to 3000 rpms. Usually around 2000

Have you checked your oil to see if the level is going down, ie burning oil?

 

Most of the time I drive on post, below 35mph. I havent opened the hood of my tacoma so far, but I will check the oil first thing in the morninig.

Well it's no wonder, you haven't used the go pedal yet.

You're at over 500 miles. Go hit an on ramp and floor it. Let it shift itself at WOT.

 

Every time I sit in the truck, I wanna take on freeway and FLOOR the pedal but I was waiting till the engine breaks in at 1000miles.

 

It's not smoke people, its condensation/steam. Did you ever notice that when it's cold outside and you exhale you get a smaller version of the same thing?

 

I think your truck is a lemon and you should trade it in on a Prius asap before it blows up!

 

Bro, EVERY car I have owned post 2000 has burned a little oil. My 2001 Vette burned enough for the low oil light to come on between oil changes when I would drive it really hard. My 03 330i bimmer did the same, my 03 C32 AMG burnt it a bunch too. Talking about Honda's the S2000 will burn up a good bit depending on how you drive. I was told this is normal. I would not worry.

 

Go trade your truck in on another little car and be happy! You do not like driving a truck so get rid of it- gas prices are only gonna get worse. Seriously, be like Nike and Just Do It No one here will call you a weenie I won't let them.

Just please GOD test drive your next car before you buy it.

 

I love the Civic Si, I would get one if it could tow a trailer, haul stuff in the bed, and was available in 4wd. I guess then it would be a Ridgeline!!! LOL

But seriously, comparing a Civic Si and a Truck is apples to oranges. You wont get sympathy on this forum. Why did you buy it then?

 

Civic SI's are fun to drive. So fun in fact that you really do not realize that you are not going fast

You should do like I am doing. Paying off the truck because every guy needs a truck, and building up a play car on the side. Bam, best of both worlds. Hard on your pocket but SO worth it IMO.

Oh, or do like a lot of guys on here if you really want something high-revving that is fast, and get ya a crotch-rocket.

 

You might actually be smelling burning residue/paint/etc since the drivetrain is brand-new. I bought mine 14 years ago off the lot with 10 miles on it. It kind of had this burnt paint/grease smell for a week or so then went away.

 

It is condensation. Just drive it. and for the love of pete. Floor that sucker next time you are on the interstate.
