All Tacomas (including the TRD off road) have an auto-LSD technology (powered by the brakes) for traction control on normal road surfaces. It isn't as helpful off road. It sort of works in 4-Hi, but you need a lot of wheel spin to get it to kick in. There are some videos of regular traction control working off road. But it does not activate in 4-Low.

The TRD-OR gets the locker, as has been mentioned, and it gets A-TRAC. This is different from regular traction control, although it fundamentally does the same thing. Active traction control (a-trac) is designed for off road use only and can only activate in 4wd, I think it might even be restricted to 4-low only. It cranks up the wheel sensor sensitivity so it operates at lower wheel speeds and more aggressive about applying the brakes to control wheel spin. It requires an electronic-hydraulic brake booster so it can operate the brakes effectively at low engine speed.

So if you're talking about off road traction control you should be looking for mentions of A-TRAC or active traction control. The regular traction control will sort of work off road, but not nearly as well because it is designed for on-road traction control. Also worth mentioning is the TRD-OR gets crawl control, which relies on A-TRAC.

Keep in mind I am basing all this on how the 2nd gen works, but I am assuming it will be a lot of the same for the 3rd gen.

So if there is only a $1000 difference from the DCSB SR5 and DCSB TRD Sport then besides the wheel upgrade what else is upgraded from the SR5?

Does anyone know what $2400 additional gets you when upgrading to the TRD Sport?

So if I'm going to tow a camping trailer it sounds like TRD Sport package is a must. Agree?

The tow package is a stand alone package with any V6. You could get an SR or SR5 V6 with the tow package and be fine for towing. But i think the tow package is included with a TRD sport or off road package as far as I've ever seen. I think you'd have to go out of your way to find a TRD that doesn't have a tow package.

Can you tow (light weight) with a 2WD DCSB TRD sport, if needed?

Usually 2WD's are rated to tow more than 4WD.

Those do not come with the Sport. Most of what you listed only comes with the Premium & Technology package on any model

Tow ratings are largely independent of drive system*. For the 2nd gen, any tacoma with any engine or drive line is rated to tow 3500lbs. If you have the v6 with the tow package it goes up to ~6500 max. The 3rd gen should be the same if not a bit higher.

*I mean in the sense of their classification by Toyota, not that all drive systems in any vehicle can tow equally well.

Sorry, I am going by the Canadian order guide. I forgot the American version is equipped slightly different.
