The weight capacity of the rail/cleat system is lower than the D-rings. I don't have the specifics in front of me right now, but I believe the limit for the rail/cleat system is something like 150 lbs. - and then only within certain angles (it's in the owner's manual somewhere). Not enough for me to comfortably trust using them to tie down my motorcycles (maybe the dirt bike... but not the street bike) - but if that's enough for your needs, that might be a cool way to do it. I attached my D-rings via the bed bolts as the originator of this thread illustrates. You could probably pick the rear of the truck off the ground by them before they failed. Very sturdy/strong.

Spoke with a supplier and here was an email I got today that you folks might be interested in:
"In regaurds to you D-RING order, they have up untill this week been discontinued. The company that made them for Toyota had gone out of business. Toyota has found a replacement company to make this product for them and they have released the first 1000 units to Toyota as of yesterday in Kentucky. They will be shipping out 786 of these out to the other depots this week and my depot should have some in by next Tues. I will have to wait until then to place the order and then ship them to you."

Yeah, they all come stock with D-rings in the rear of the bed... we're talking about adding another pair up front (and some added a third pair in the center too).

Yeah I needed some up front for securing my atv. The bed rail system is crap and can't hold as much weight as the d-rings.

I don't know if you bought your truck brand new or not, but it didn't come with six D-rings in the floor of the bed from the factory (not talking about the adjustable rail system tie-downs at the top of the bed). They only install the two at the rear of the bed next to the tail gate. If yours really has six D-rings attached to the floor of the bed, then either the previous owner or your dealer installed the ones at the front and in the middle of the bed.

Wow, that is great news! I am sure that someone from Toyota is reading these boards and making design changes as they should be.

The dealer will probably sell the rings for 10x the price of the surplus ones

The Toyota OEM D-Rings are $25 at the dealer (part# PT278-35054)... or you can order them HERE for $18.88 (+ shipping).

Already got them a long time ago. Got them for $10.01 cdn total including shipping for 5 rings for the surplus store. Very pleased any would highly recommend them to anyone. But if anyone wants to spend $20 for a set of two go right ahead. :)

I'm happy for you. Two is all I needed and I like that they match the OEM rings in that came in the rear of the bed. It's $20. Big f'n deal. :)

Glad your happy for me. I wanted 4 rings so that would probably be $45-50 shipping included. So getting 5 rings for 10 dollars saved me $40+. Just trying to save people some cash for more mods :)

I see the toyota rings come with backer plates.... so could we theoretically put those anywhere if we make our own holes?

Yes, but they wouldn't be near as strong as with the bed bolts. If you just use rope/bungies with light stuff you might be fine. But if you haul heavy stuff with tie downs (the ratchet kind) I wouldn't recomend it.
