Yup. I'm satisfied with it. Definitely gave me a few extra HP. Check out my pictures. I have a few pics of the intake in there.

If you aren't S/C, in general, whatever you gain up top you lose from the bottom. That sucks for trucks. Once you are S/C though the intake isn't sized right for the airflow and a CAI can help.

If you already have the TRD Exhaust and TRD Intake and you don't care about noise... DO NOT CHANGE A THING.

I put a K&N Intake on my truck. The engine makes a lot more noise under load. That's what changed. If I stomp on it - it gets loud. It still goes the same speed and still uses the same amount of gas. It just sucks air a lot louder than before.

Increased airflow only matters if the engine can suck it in and burn it quickly enough. Much as if you continue to increase the velocity of a self defense round (talking ammunition now since I see your profile says you're a deputy). Once you reach the point where velocity and mass allow the bullet to penetrate all the way through a human body there's no longer a point in increasing velocity. Can it be done? Sure. Will it provide any benefit? No. Why? Because the point isn't to go through the human and the block wall behind them. It's to cause as much damage while passing through the body to effectively stop a perceived threat. More velocity doesn't make the bullet "better".

As others have stated comparing with a Super Charger is pointless. The engine and exhaust system pull air in through your airfilter as a result of the combustion happening inside the cylinders and the vacuum caused by the exhaust gases moving out the rear. A Super Charger or Turbo on the other hand mechanically force air into the engine. This is why these systems are no longer called "naturally aspirated". Much in the same way as a human naturally aspirates (i.e. breaths) where as in a hospital setting we can push air into your lungs mechanically. How they work, and the physics behind them, are not inherently the same. The human lungs act as a vacuum when the diaphragm releases and allows air to suck into the empty space in your lungs. This is why a collapsed lung cannot simply re-open itself. Much as a vacuum sealed bag cannot inflate itself. Where as, breathing machines push air into your lungs (much as a turbo or super charger) and thereby can inflate a lung using mechanical forces.

BTW - I want to say the first two pages of this thread were hilarious to read. :)

EDIT: As a side note - had I left my intake stock I could hear my exhaust better. As it is now at low revs (RPM) I hear my exhaust. At high RPM I hear air induction and therefore have no idea what my exhaust sounds like under load.

Here's another analogy that might help:

If I gave you a coffee stir straw and asked you to use it to suck water out of a glass how well would it work? This would be a restrictive intake.

If I then gave you a normal sized soda straw and asked you to do the same would it work better? Sure!

If I gave you a straw three times as wide could you suck water through it faster AND swallow it faster?

And if I gave you a straw bigger than your mouth could you still suck water down and swallow it faster?

This is how a naturally aspirated engine works. It sucks air in and can only gobble it up as fast as it's cylinders, internal combustion, and exhaust system allow.

However, if I shoved a garden hose in your mouth and pushed water down your throat using high water pressure I bet I could force water down faster than you could normally suck it through a straw and then swallow it. That's basically how a Super Charger or a Turbo works.

The point is there will always be a restriction somewhere else that will limit your performance. More and more natural air intake at some point becomes meaningless. And the folks who initially answered the thread were trying to explain that in the experience of so many folks on TW over the years no real performance gains are had with a V6 4.0L Tacoma engine by changing out your TRD Air Intake because it already pulls in as much air as the engine can swallow naturally.

Hard to say. It feels better on the butt dyno but that doesn't mean much. It definitely feels like it woke up the S/C though.

It's crazy how any little mod you do will wake it up. It can be anything, you will immediately feel the difference. Butt dyno is actually a very good dyno.

On the 2014 Tacoma, it is my understanding that that is when the secondary air pump was added to aid in cold starts. Is this what makes the TRD intake incompatable? If it is, wouldn't the secondary air pump just need to be relocated in the same manner that all these other intake kits would relocate that pump?

I had a first gen Tundra, ran a Volant for about 21,000 miles. I switched back to the stock air box and it did in fact feel suffocated, so within a week I put the Volant back on. Like someone else said, it may not mean much on the dyno, but the seat of the pants, feel was much more peppier. I just traded it in for a '15 Tacoma. I drove it for a week, and read all these threads. I decided to pull the charcoal filter and I definitely notice a difference. Sounds better, accelerates better, throttle response feels quicker. Again, I realize this may all be in my head, but the experience with my Tundra makes me think that getting air in there easier does something. An engine is just a big air pump. Also, when I pulled the charcoal filter, I blew through it with an air hose and also stuck it in front of a fan. You could barely feel any air going through it, so it is obviously restrictive. Just my .02. Thanks to all for all the great information on here.

Makes sense. Less restrictive ingestion increases efficiency. No surprise there.

I should have time tomorrow to play around with my intake. Hopefully.

What else compares to the Volant? As far as that style of intake, is the Volant the ticket?

I have noticed an audible whistle when I shut off the engine. Sort of cool.

Volant is pretty much an enclosed air box. But it has better tube and a less restrictive filter. Looks a lot like all the other CAIs except the filter is enclosed. Tacoma even has a ram air sort of option.
