2011 V6 with the upside down oil filter started leaking just enough to make a sloppy mess on everything underneath it. Anyone else have this problem? It currently has a K&N filter with the check valve.

    Also, is the cap on?

There should be a rubber cap over the nipple under the oil cooler

Yep...wiped down the mounting surface before installing the new filter. Just saw the metal surface.

Ok...I see what you are talking about. Nah. Guess the stealership left it off. Even still, it shouldn't be leaking. The filter is tight. Is there a seal under the oil cooler where it sits in the thing with the drain?

Why would a dealer install a K&N filter and if its leaking just change it it would take less time than posting this complaint

The dealer has been changing the oil since the truck was new. When I bought it, I changed the oil the next time. It did not have a cover over the nipple. I'm not sure it's the filter and was asking if maybe the base plate the filter screws to had a gasket/seal under it. I wasn't posting a "complaint" but merely asked a question which is the purpose of the forum.

Never had a rubber cap on 2009 or 2013. If you put a can under the nipple before removing filter then there is no need for one. To the OP, I would try a different filter such as a OEM.

Instead of the rubber cap, get a clear rubber hose and run it down to your skid plate. Then when you do oil changes pull the end out of the skid plate and into the oil drain pan.

worst case, spin that filter off, replace with OEM filter, and top off oil

Understood BUT if the filter leaking the very first thing I would do is try another filter and since you were unaware of the nipple under the filter adapter are you sure the mess isn't from when you changed it with out a catch can? Not trying to be a dickhead just pointing out the obvious.

I never said I didn't know the nipple was there (I placed a plastic coffee can under it when I took the filter off) what I didn't know was there was supposed to be a rubber cap on the drain. My main question isn't if I need a cap or if the filter leaked but "is there another gasket underneath the oil cooler?" If it is and it's leaking then changing the filter will do nothing.

Process of elimination. Filters are really cheep, so I would just change the filter, clean up the mess, and check if it still leaks. If it does, then you can start to worry that it might be something else.
