    Not enough...
Went camping in Idyllwild yesterday and hiked to the top of Tahquitz Peak first thing this morning. These 2 dumbasses decided that running around in circles and chasing each other all the way to the top through the entire 4.8 mile hike up the mountain was the best idea ever. By the time we got down to the truck it was hot as hell and they were feeling it more then I did... I think Dre dog will be sufficiently tired for the next couple of days.

Here's a clip from training Katie this spring. She is steady to shot.

Here's Augie same day. He breaks on the flush. He needs more work.

If I could get Sadie to hold for the shot, and the bird to hit the ground, I'd have a Field Trial Champion on my hands. Guess I didn't get the right training early enough. I'll keep trying, though.

Good luck! Just started platform training a week ago (place board) for the pup. Going to train for sit on scent, flush on command then sit again through flush and shot. But the hunter part of me would be happy with just sit to flush.

Sit to flush? What does that mean? I don't understand. Literally, you want the dog to sit? I have seen pointing labs, but they didn't sit.

I assume he means that he will flush himself? Not sure about the sitting part, but mine was trained to point, then I got and flush, then I shoot, and the shot means the dog needs to go and retrieve. Unfortunately mine is not much of a hunter. He is more excited about chasing other dogs that look for birds. heh

Hey Don In a perfect world, a double hup
Dog locks in on scent and once he is sure that there is a bird hups (sits). You move in and when your ready release the dog- command flush it up, and it rushes in and flushes the bird. As soon as the bird flushes he sits once again and marks the fall of the bird. Well hopefully I hit it and he has a mark to retrieve :)

Right now he does pause on scent and locks up standing very much like he is on point. A pointing Toller LOL? But then after a few seconds pounces forward and rushes in. My next step is to basically whoa him and then have him sit at scent. Sort of torn about the first hup at scent or sight because so many wild birds are runners now days. I would prefer him to move and pin the bird down if it runs (Springers excel at that with phez) and wait for me to get there. Very much like the debate for pointers to self relocate on runners, which is also my preference.

I don't know anything about the Toller. Thanks for the clarification.

Not many people do Senior, they are kind of rare. Been around the breed for 30 years and always hunted upland with them as a flusher. This year got drawn for SD waterfowl so he will get his chance at ducks before he is even 1 year old, and hopefully Tolling them in also. Need to get you out there with the rest of us retired Navy guys some year now that your officially retired from the Navy too

I only train my dogs up to steady to shot. Mostly for safety reasons.
Also (too me) its more like a partnership between them and me. I rarely issue any commands
when we're hunting except some coaxing to retrieve. I tried hunt tests a few years ago. Don't want to train to that level,
and there's too much standing around waiting your turn. Its too bad that its not a spectators venue.
Katie is pretty well done for my purposes. Augie is a work in progress. They both back reliably
and retrieve. Just working on Augie to hold for the shot.

Scuttlebutt on the net is Kansas is looking at a pretty decent bird season after 3 lousy ones.
I thought about going to SD this year also. I too would be going in blind, but I hear there's lots of
    good public hunting.

My cousin and her husband live in Kansas. He's an avid hunter. Says Kansas isn't that great for pheasant anymore. Maybe it's changed. But he said best bet is SD. This was last year that he said that, though.

I've been hunting west Kansas for the last 10yrs. Was great til the last three. Severe drought. Last year was also not great in SD, but still better than KS.

This year is looking good for KS and SD is also rebounding. NW Missouri is also looking good for quail this year. I will be busy this year and hope the dogs get into a lot of birds. Augie has never seen a great year. I've got the "want to's" and am getting ready. Been rigging my new truck https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/hunting-set-up.386501/#post-10600479

I agree with all of this. Find out on the 22nd at the dog show if I'm going to continue with all the other stuff and how polished I have to have him.

Yeah all reports say KS and even Iowa are doing well this year. I'm even seeing a few roosters around here this year. SD is a shadow of what it used to be and so is ND. They lost CRP land a few years ago and been in a slide since. We have access to some private land on occasion and that is still great. The Admiral and I got skunked one day last year, not a bird between us hunting public and pinching ditches. SD is still likely the greatest show on earth but it has taken us 12 years to get to know the land and people.

    So speaking of training...
Couple of months ago had the pup over on the river and he wouldn't go within 50 feet of the water. Windy with high waves but my first thought was he has no water courage. Last night I finally got a chance to take him to a nearby lake. Tied some cord to the bumper because I figured I'd need it to get my bumper back. I was wrong and ended up throwing it as far as I could by the 3rd throw
    [IMG]

I had to pull him to get him to leave. Kept giving him breaks I was afraid he was going to drown he was so exhausted but he wouldn't quit. Next time will be dead ducks.

Kept the TT15 collar on him, a little nervous with the cost of the Alpha and collar but worth it to me to know where he is at all times. Never thought I would have a dog wearing hardware that talks to US and Russian satellites.

Well Cold Iron, looks like we need to put together an SD Tacoma World run for pheasant. Between Fishpond, pruchai, you and me, we ought to limit on birds.

    we have an Italian Greyhound

    I would guess he's about 7 pounds

perfect for our condo living .... the Vet/Breeder we got him from - litter box trained him, which means here in Michigan, in the dead of Winter when he needs to "go" at 4 AM, he just goes in the spare bathroom in a box we have set up, and goes ... I don't have to get dressed and take him outside

    very smart dog !
