As I was changing my oil this evening, I had the notion to post this thread. I figured everyone has had that funny story/experience while in the process of changing your oil. Today, I grabbed all of the necessary tools and slid under the truck. As I placed the socket over the plug and began unscrewing, SLIP! The socket wouldn't grab, so my immediate assumption was that I had rounded off the plug. So I checked the socket size and sure enough I had grabbed the 15mm over the 14mm. I then slid back under the truck to find the plug was already loose. As a result of my stupidity and lack of self-awareness, I present this thread. So go ahead and share your story along with your preferred oil brand! I use Valvoline 5W-30 conventional.

Haha I hate dumb things like that.

Last time I changed mine I unscrewed the filter before taking the rubber stopper off from under the tray.

Luckily the tray held all the spillage but the whole time I'm yelling SHIT SHIT SHIT.

Man, I'm surprised it didn't overflow! Glad it didn't though. My filter pan doesn't have the rubber plug?

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
Last time I changed oil I underestimated how viscous it was since It was still so hot. I had the edge of the pan a couple inches past the drain plug figuring that the other 12+ inches would be enough. Nope. Oil shot out a whole foot past the drain pan all over the driveway. Doh! Valvoline synthetic.

Wow, I've never heard of such. I usually let my truck cool down, start it, and let it run for 3-4 minutes. I then turn it off and change the oil.

Bought a brand new oil filter wrench for my truck, tried for twenty minutes trying to get it on the filter in order to turn it off (I have the 2.7 Liter), after giving up I tried removing it by hand....

    worked like a charm.

I am sure this has happened to everyone at some point, dropping the Drain Plug into the drain pan...

LOL I pay to have my oil changed. Not that expensive in the grand scheme of things.

First time I changed my own oil though was right after I started driving... learned crap the hard way.

Paid $800 for an old 1980 Nissan 280ZX. Dad told me it was time to learn to do my own maintenance since part time high school employee couldn't afford to pay for labor.

I parked in a gravel patch beside my parent's driveway. Crawled under and opened her up. Wearing basketball shorts and a white t-shirt. Not very comfortable on all that rock... and weeds... in southern Arizona. My shirt was so full of thorns and my back itched like mad. When my dad heard me bitching about it he says, "Why didn't you just move my truck and park your car in the driveway? Think harder, work easier."

Not tool long ago this happened to me but of course I had to take it to the next level. After the drain plug popped out and into the pan, as oil is shooting out I reach after the plug not thinking and the stream of warm oil hits my wrist that then ricochets off my hand and all over my forehead, and hair. Wonderful!

That was on my Chevrolet work van. The drain plug is on the side of the oil pan.

Last oil change, I couldn't get the filter off. I had my cousin try, no luck. Called my brother in law to try, no luck. Even my neighbor saw me struggling. He tried and no luck. I call my dad, he hammers a screw driver into the filter and BAM!! it twisted right off.

My dad showed me how to change oil before I could drive. Changed the oil in all my vehicles for 40 years right up to 2012 when I bought the Tacoma. It came with the free oil changes for 25,000 miles. It now has 55,000 miles. I got spoiled. The dealership still changes my oil. I have no idea what oil they use. I am so ashamed.

Do you oil the gasket around the new oil filters before placement?

Hey, we all get lazy at times. My dad used to be about the "DIY Oil Change", but now he uses the dealer.

I figured Toyotas were reliable enough you don't really have to change the oil. :boink:

I was changing the oil in my wife's Audi wagon we used to have. I had been on a 6-12 shift for about a month with very little sleep. I removed the drain plug, got side tracked, then proceeded to pour 6 qts of Mobile 1 full synthetic straight through the motor and into the drain pan. I didn't realize until I finished pouring the last one.
