How much depreciation after 3rd gen comes out?

So how much depreciation should we expect on second gens after the 3rd gen rolls out?

 

Not much. Just look at some of the crazy asking prices people still post for first gens.

After all the new goodies courtesy of Toyota...........once they get it right.........mine should appreciate.

 

No more than BEFORE the 3rd generation....A 2 year old Tacoma is a 2 year old Tacoma......and so on. Unless the 3rd generation turns out to be the holy grail of mid-size trucks, they're just "next years new model". And if the '16's turn out to be something less than well perceived, you MIGHT even see older Tacomas in good shape and low miles go UP in value.

 

Depreciation is based on 3 primary factors- age, mileage and condition of the vehicle. None of these 3 primary factors are affected by anything other than the vehicle itself.

 

I just bought a 15, gotta get em while you still can if you want new. I just couldn't come to terms with some of the things they did to the 16s, especially the front grill.

Not totally true. Perceived value from the buyers perspective is a big part too. The desirability of the model and the amount people are willing to pay for it. If it were only the 3 listed, the Tacoma would not have as high of a resale value that it does.

 

That is a true statement for resale pricing. Which has little to do with actual depreciated value.

Ask your insurance agent if the resale pricing of your popular vehicle will improve the payout of a totaled claim, or even raise threshold of what totaled is.

 

Actual depreciation is based on the value of a vehicle at sale time. That value is based on the resale values of cars in the market, both wholesale, retail and trade. Insurance payout is based on these values. Specifically, Tacoma values are based on the amount people are willing to pay, and the "book" values then are adjusted based on that. Any insurance payout will be based on these book values.

 

So, back to the OP... Who the hell knows

If it were most other vehicles, I'd say it will take a hit 6-12 months after the new model comes out, and the new one isn't a dud. From what I've seen the hit is around a double year's value, give or take. But with a Tacoma, who knows, I have never quite understood the Taco's value on the used market at all. Makes no sense to me. When I bought my 09, I looked at a couple of 07-08 models trying to save some money. The price, after I was dealing with them, was way to close to new, to not just go ahead and buy new. The Gen 1s still hold their value more then I think they should to.

 

well the thing is that I want to get a 2015 TRD offroad.

im trying to sell my prerunner privately to insure i get a better deal for my taco.

id like to jump on a 2015 before they get more scarce.. but then if they take a depreciation hit, i can wait six months after i sell my truck and pick up a used one.

but then @Lurkin has a valid point, they dont depreciate much. but thats respect to the same generation, not from one generation to another.

 

It's a Tacoma, you throw the dice, you take your chances.

 

im being offered a plain jane 2015 TRD Offroad for $31,771 down from a sticker price of $35k

so idk if to jump on that, or wait longer until my peerunner sells and see what happens

 

Well considering 2gen trucks are last to have supercharger as an option, last to have Land Cruiser engine in it (which makes them helluva popular outside US).
2005-2008 are last non traction controlled trucks.
(there are a lot of last)
I would not trade 2gen for 3 gen for any money.
Its the same thing like with first Gens people simply will not want to part with them, which means in about 2 years (once few people sell them to just on 3Gen ) resale value is going to hit a roof just like first gens.
I would worry more about some good Alarm for a truck.

 

Is the price good? I like Edmunds for new pricing and what they are actually going for. Whether you should wait? If it were me, if the truck is what I want and the current price is good, I would move forward with it. Waiting for something that may, or may not, happen doesn't work well for me. But, I would also either get the Prerunner sold first or just trade it in. I've sat on cars that I decided to sell myself before for far longer then I wanted.
