look at it this way, grey is just a light shade of black and it sure looks better then red "don't ya think"

it looks beautiful and its "almost new" plus you have everything you were asking for there (which was asking for a hell of a lot) so its perfect in every way, just not black

I say buy it and relax, you did an excellent job finding just the perfect vehicle that meets all your needs and requirements.

stop waiting for "whats going to happen next" and put the civic to bed

This is funny to me. I just noticed the exact same car today and said to myself. This is something Jen would like as decent car. Gray is a very good color for looking clean the longest and hiding scratches.

It starts correctly now, thanks to the best dealer tech ever.
    Civ update!

Eric did a jumper wire to override the computer and it started and ran fine. CEL came on. He shut it off and is reading now about how to get the code (no OBD II on Civ, too old). This is good news to me though, because at least it's fast progress compared to what went on with the Taco. Should hopefully have some answers/decisions soon...........

EDIT: We are wondering if it could be the distributor again, because it acted like this in the past when it was the distributor. Wondering if the oil leak (that is now repaired) was destroying distributors? Would be an easy fix if that's it.....

Oh good grief. Started it back up, and no CEL this time, go figure. But it started fine, and is running fine, so he's driving it around the block a few times to see WTF it does. :fingerscrossed:

I think you just scared the hell out of it by finally deciding to buy the grey corolla lol.

seriously, it probably threw a code from the bad ground and now it reset since you fixed that

does anybody elses v6 whistle at highway speeds but stop when you accelerate or go down hill?

its like it only does it under "slight" load but not unloaded or heavy load.

I have done tests and eliminated the intake as the possible cause

I've never noticed if the Taco does that whistle thing. Guess I typically have the Waylon cranked up too loud to notice!! :rockband:

Guess what the very first thing we did this morning was???????????

START THE CIVIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And guess what, at least for the moment?????????:burnrubber: HURRAY!!!!

Here's how the Civic was fixed (warning, do NOT follow our example when fixing your own car; we are NOT professional mechanics, just actors that do lots of pretending on TW):

He didn't even mess with the ground wire or anything. He tried to start it, and it did the same thing as it had in the morning - RPMs revving up and down all crazy, then died.

So he jammed a paper clip  into a jumper connector that sticks out under the glovebox (from the computer I think?) - he said it bypasses the computer, or sort of resets it I guess? Anyway, while that was in there, tried starting it and VOILA!!! No more problems. And he thought a CEL came up but it never came back and now he's thinking it just flashed as it normally would when the car is started. Tried to see if there was a code but nothing.

CIVIC lives on y'all!! :burnrubber: For the moment anyway :D I think this is the most I've ever loved the Civic, in the entire 17 years I've owned the car. It's crunch time, I'm really hoping that little red beast can hold it together just a little longer. Can't share details on "why" right now, but there's a good reason we  she lives just a little longer........

Eric's now shifted back to pricing parts for all that boot crap. It's kinda confusing!! We are looking at a suspension kit that includes control arms, which are the same thing as the compliance bushings that Honda said we needed. But we also wanna be sure we aren't buying something to do "mods" or whatever!!

Good Tuesday morning to ya TW!! Dolly & I are heading to the park soon :burnrubber:

well its starting to bore a hole in my brain lol.

I want to muffle it somehow, that "pitch" just drives me crazy and I prefer not to have to turn up the radio that loud ort I get headaches from that!

any ideas? im thinking its an exhaust whistle in the headers somewhere because I drove with the filter flap open so that rules it an intake whistle from air restriction.

By the way TW, my buddy Matt thinks we should do some mods to the Civ and make it look like this:

now you are having electrical or computer issues on a car that is only worth $420?

reality check here, you are jumping out of a plane without a parachute in that thing so bring a lunch and comfortable shoes for walking home because the thing is dying right in front of your eyes and you are looking to spend more money on it ??????????????????????????????? you may as well burn that money because that is exactly what you are doing with every penny you spend on the civic. but your not going to listen, you will spend $1000 on it and then cry when its a hunk of unusable junk soon after with all those expensive new parts on it heading to the scrapper.

my friend, you are in denial about this, if you have to jumper the computer to make it work then you have electrical issues now and those are the worst issue to ever have because once they start, you start having electrical issues with all sorts of thing everywhere on the car. there comes a time in every family pets life where it needs to be put to sleep to end its suffering, its time the civic was put down. if you want to let it die on its own, fine but stop spending money on it, stop!!!! just put gas in it and drive it as-is until it dies, which wont be very long IMHO.

that perfect Toyota corolla you found will get sold and your civic will die and then you will be stuck buying a car you hate because that's all you could find that was affordable and you will forever regret not buying your perfect car at a good price when it was yours for the taking. you want to keep the civic? fine, but you should buy the corolla and park it in the yard under a cover, then drive the civic until it dies knowing you have its replacement there ready to go.

if you want to keep the civic then fine, but don't fool yourself, you need to buy and install a low mileage engine and transmission in it and then a whole new front end and tires. your looking at spending about $4k ish on doing all that. it needs a full ground up suspension and drivetrain replacement and a new sunroof installed.

not trying to depress you but you are in the mindset of short term one part at a time but there is no end to that road, you know this, don't relive the taco fiasco please!

Don't worry, I don't think we have computer prob's. Who knows, I could be wrong. But I know the timing of that car has something to do with the distributor, and I think whatever was going on had something to do with that. I'm not worried about needing a computer. And there's no way in hell that car needs a new tranny or engine. The oil leak appears to be fixed, no more knock noise, and whatever that last hiccup was seems to be resolved. And I could care less about the sunroof or even the AC in the short term. The car still drives, and in the short term that's all we need from it. :D

And right now we are just PRICING parts for that other crap. No decisions have been made yet. :D We've spent less than $100 so far (not counting the $70 diagnosis at Honda) on plugs, PCV valve, VTEC seals for oil leak, coolant, thermostat, and new temp sensor. Oh yeah, and we used a paper clip to fix the current problem, and used a bottle of Techron we had in the shed. :D We are DEFINITELY pinching pennies when it comes to spending to keep the Civ going. We realize it's a losing battle in the big picture. One step at a time.

Today, I am just happy that it is running normally. Every additional day it does is $ in our pocket right now. :D

Sorry @keakar , not gonna burst my momentary bubble of vehicle happiness. Let me have one day to be glad for no vehicle prob's buddy!?!?!!?

its ok, I can see your mind is made up and you are set on your path.

the engine and tranny need will be from the high mileage it has because after spending all the money you are going to spend, you will be trapped and have to keep it then.

also, if eric cleans up that ground connection you probably don't need to jumper the ecm anymore

Jen, ask you Toyota dealership guys if they know what this v6 "whistle" is and if there is a way to fix it?

it seams lots of people find they have it but no one knows what it is or how to stop it

He only jumpered it that first time, hasn't had to either time it's been started since. I think something to do with the timing/distributor was goofy, not sure why but that car has done that before once or twice and it was always distributor related.

Nah, we aren't dumb enough to spring for new tranny or engine in that thing. Gimme just a smidge of credit please! o_O

We might not even do anything with the front end crap, I'm just not sure what the worst case scenario is if we keep driving it without fixing those things, because I don't really understand the severity of those problems - like if we caught it early type thing, or if the car is about to break into a billion pieces or what. I guess my hope is that we can get away with just a couple hundred to replace a few of the most important components. All the Honda tech said we needed was CV boots and compliance bushings. But Eric also sees that a tie rod boot or some such item needs replacing as well. We gotta talk about all that some more. I might call Honda parts and ask them to email me a list of the exact names/part #s for the work that was recc' when we took it in there a few weeks ago. I'm just not clear on exactly what we need yet so I have no clue about costs. Then at least I'd know what we are shopping for exactly.

get the CV boots at the very least, make sure you add some grease, move on...if you do not replace the boots and add grease, they will fail at the most inopportune time, ask me how I know this.....:angrygirl:

You could try private messaging noahpete on here I guess?

I know that guy is super busy working overtime constantly and has a family, so I don't really want to call & bug him unless we are having a true Taco crisis.
