I am just scared my friend is going to get trapped into another "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation.

most front end stuff is no big deal and you don't "have to" fix it until the wheels start wobbling causing vibrations when you drive it, but nothing is just going to "fall apart" on you.

at this point if the boots are torn just add a little grease in there and wrap the shit out of em with duct tape, they are just a cover to keep dirt out so if you can seal it up, that's all it needs to be good.

Thanks, this is the kind of advice I was looking for, trying to better understand in general what kind of danger this crap can cause.........

I don't know, it depends if they fell apart or if it just split cleanly in two. if its a clean split, then yes duct tape will work, if its falling apart then no, there is nothing left to it to hold its shape and you have to replace it.

Maybe we should run a contest to see who can come up with the most hillbilly, half assed way to keep bandaiding the Civ back together. C'mon, she only needs to run a few more months guys. We can do this. I have lots of duct tape and rubber bands.

No, duct tape will NOT work, maybe for a day or three, and yes, stranded on side of freeway after a rather loud and scary massively vibrating stop.....

hey you wanted cheapo fixes and that's as shade tree red neck as it gets lol.

seriously though, I had duct tape on my steering boots for over a year and it never came off and it worked fine. but bldegle2 has a point in that the cv joint in there is like a u-joint spinning around so if you are going to tape it you need to be sure not to alter its shape because it needs the clearance so nothing gets caught up in the spinning u-joint. as long as you use good quality tape there should be no issues

replacing the boots is fairly EZ, remove axle nut. turn wheel completely right or left depending on which side you are working on, yank axle out of hub assembly (axle will stay attached to transmission), take off old boot, regrease and install new boot, make sure the zip clips are tight, reinstall in reverse order...DO NOT turn tire and rim when the axle is out, not good for the bearings...your biggest problem is going to get the 185 ft lbs torque to clamp it down, or whatever Honda requires, this is what VW's torque specs are...it has to be fairly close, the bearings need the proper torque to keep them happy...

Yes, duct tape will work on a steering rack, but not on a rotating, grease loaded CV cover...get real people, fix it right, the parts are not that expensive for this particular repair...

I've broke 4 CV joints on front wheel drive cars over the years. Every one broke while backing up and turning very sharp right or left. I never had one break while just plain driving.

My 1998 Tacoma lost a boot at 26000 miles. I drove it to 300000 miles with no grease. I knew they were most vulnerable while backing up and turning, so I did not do that.

My vote is to just squish some grease in the thing and nothing more.

They are easy money for most shops, so they always get mentioned to be repaired.

Worry about something else with this car.

koditten you got lucky, but as you said, you broke four CV's on front wheel drive vehicle over the years....it is far more expensive to replace a constant velocity joint or a whole axle...since they are headed down the minimal repair route, do the boots right, with their luck and the wet weather that abounds year round in the Pacific Northwest the water will leach the grease rather quickly...

when mine went, it wasn't pretty, and all I was doing was driving straight down the freeway, fortunately, I had an extended warranty that covered the repairs, except for towing....

a set of two boots, clips and two bags of grease will set them back about $30 from fleabay....for a little more, you can get split boots which do not require axle removal, around $40 or so for a set of two...
